RATEPAYERS’ ASSOCIATION.
A meeting of tho newly-formed Ratepayers’ Association was held in the Congregational school: oom, last evening, Mr Pratt presiding. There was a good attendance of members. The secretary read tho report of the committee, from which it appeared that they had carefully gone through tho burgess rolls for the purpose of selecting the names of personswhom they might recommend the Association to support at tho forthcoming election of City Councillors. Although it was not required by law that the candidates’ names should bo on the roll of the ward which they propose to represent, the committee thought it desirable that, if practicable, the selection should be confined to those who either resided in or whose business premises were situate in the ward. They had kept this in view in tho recommendations which they decided to make, although it had added considerably to tho difficulty of the selection. The committee had interviewed a large number of ratepayers to ascertain whether they were willing to accept office, and they recommended the following; N.W. Ward—Messrs N. K. Oherrill, J. Gapes. T. S. Lambert. N.E. Ward—Messrs E, O. Bishop, W. Ohrystall, H. Thomson. 8 W. Ward—Messrs R. W. England, 0. B. Taylor, W. Vincent. S.E. Ward —Messrs A. Cuff, C. P. Hulbert, S. Manning. These were put [to the meeting seriatim and approved of, a few others being suggested. The report was adopted, and a vote of thanks accorded to the committee for their labours. Mr Cherrill made some remarks concerning the good work done by a similar association at Tunbridge Wells, England, and the meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the chairman.
