LICENSING COURT.
OKEIBTOHUEOH. The quarterly meeting of the Licensing Bench was held at the Resident Magistrate’s Court to-day at noon, when the following Commissioners were present:—G. L. Hellish, Esq., B.M. (chairman), R. J. S. Harman, and H. J. Tivncred, Esqs. NEW LICENSES. John Sommers applied for a license for an hotel, to be called the Sydenham Hotel, Colombo street south, Mr Holmes for the applicant. The applicant stated his application was backed by a petition in his favor bearing 552 signatures. The house was needed, and would be a great convenience to persons bringing cattle into Christchurch. In answer to the Bench the applicant stated that the neighborhood had greatly increased since he last made an application for a license. The house had cost him £3OOO to build and furnish, and there was not another within three-quarters of a mile. The chairman stated there had been numerous counter-peti-tions against the house, and the application had been refused three times already, and unless the neighborhood had materially altered there could be no ground for reversing the previous decision of the Bench. The matter had been very carefully considered by the Bench, and it had come to the conclusion that the house was not required. The application would therefore be refused. James Magcr, hotel, Springston. Mr R. D. Thomas appeared for the applicant. Sergeant Morioe stated the house was not yet furnished. Mr Thomas pointed out the Bench
had promised the license conditionally,, and the house would bo furnished within a week. It would hare been done so already, but the plaster was not yet dry, and the furniture would have been injured by the damp. The application was adjourned for a fortnight, John Toovey, hotel, Barbadoos street and Oxford Terrace, The police reported favorably on the manner in which the house was built and furnished, and the Bench granted the application. Michael Holes, hotel, Hillsborough and Opaw roads. Mr Thomas for the applicant. The license was absolutely refused, as the house was not wanted. Edmund Bourgeois, wine and beer license. Application granted. Christian Klingenstein Hotel, Cashel street. The Bench were unanimous in their opinion that another hotel was not required, and as Mr Klingenstein conducted the house so well as it was, that they would not try the experiment of altering it-. Application granted. The application of Stephen Lawrence for an hotel in Colombo street South was withdrawn. TEANSFEES. The following transfers were confirmed : The Caledonian Hotel, from Francis Innis to James Hirst; New Brighton Hotel, from J. F. McKendrick to Thomas Tait; Barrett’s Family Hotel, from W.
