NEWS OF THE DAY.

Thb Hill Bbnbmt.—His Worship the Mayor of Ghristohurch has received the following letter from Mrs Walter Hill, which he has handed to ub for publication:— " Ohristcharch, August 28th, 1879.—0. T. Ick, Esq.—Sir,—l beg to acknowledge with feelings of the utmost gratitude the handsome recognition by the citizenß of Christchurch. It gives me, I can assure you, the greatest possible pleasure indeed that during our residence here we have been enabled to win the good opinion of the citizens, which I trust we shall always merit, and one which we most highly prize. We trust to spend many years amongst you in your fair city, where we have known many happy days, and where we hope to continue to merit the flatteringex pressions of goodwill which, during the period of our sorrow, have reached us from all sides. Allow me, in conclusion, on behalf of my children and myself, to thank, through you, the citizens of Christchurch for the heartfelt kindness which has always been expressed towards me by them, and for their tribute to the worth of him who has departed from our midst.—Believe me, yours Bincerely, Juiia Hill." Sblwyh County Council.—The usual monthly meeting of the Council was to take place to-day, but sufficient members did not put in an appearance to form a quorum. Messrs J. L. Wilson and H. W. Peryman were the only members present. Haglbt Gbicket Club.—As will be seen, by reference to our advertising columns, the annual meeting of the above club will be held on Monday evening next, September Ist, at the Oddfellows' Hall, Montreal street, at 7.30p.m. Watbb Supply.—A number of the members of the Christchurch City Council, accompanied by their surveyor, Mr Walker, and Mr Napier Bell, C E., paid a visit yesterday to that part of the Wauaakariri, the site of the proposed water supply. On arrivingat their destination they were met by Mr White, who had everything arranged for the experimental trial of the apparatus. The result of the experiments was highly satisfactory, and far exceeded expectation. A report will be brought up at the next meeting of the City Council, which it is expected will finally settle the vexed question of the eligibility of the scheme for supplying the city permanently with water.

Theatre Eoyal.—The Troubadours appeared last night in " Patchwork" and "Hash," and were well received. To-night they play in Lyttelton, as the theatre is otherwise engaged, but will re-appear on Saturday evening. Benefit Entertainment. The performance in aid of the "Lyttelton Times" Sick Fund Society takes place this evening at the Theatre Boyal. After a prologue, written especially for the occasion, a number of songs by well-known amateurs will be given. The second part will consist of Bobertson's comedy of " Society," in which the characters will be sustained by members of the "Lyttelton Times " staff, assisted by Mrs Walter Hill, Miss Arethusa May, and others. Electoral. —A meeting of the supporters of Sir George Grey and Mr S. P. Andrews will be held at the Gaiety Theatre this evening at 7.30.

Mb Cass and the Footballers.—Shortly before twelve o'clock last night a procession of footballers and sympathisers, bearing an effigy, proceeded to Mr Cass' private residence. The individuals forming the procession seemed to take great pride in the work of art which they had created, but were prevented from burning it by a myrmidon of law. After making night hideous for some time, the uproarious crowd finally dispersed. A Qttid Pbo Quo. —A man is not generally given to witty repartee when in his cups, but an exception, and one under the circumstances highly diverting, occurred at Mr Hart's meeting last evening. An individual with an eyeglass, noticing that there was present at the meet'ng a person who was palpably under the influence of liquor, took the opportunity of inquiring of the candidate whether he would promote more stringent measures for the repression of drunkenness. The inebriated " free and independent " had sufficient sense to see that the insinuation referred to himself, and throwing a glance of withering scorn at the questioner, he asked the chairman if he would be in favor of putting a tax on eye-glaßses. The meeting was convulsed with laughter for a time, and the short-sighted individual subsided.

New Heathcote Candidate. —We understand a gentleman largely connected with the mercant ; '.e interests of Lyttelton and Cbristchurch for the last fifteen years, Mr J. A. Morgan, has agreed to come forward to contest this seat. Mr Morgan has done good service to the Heathcote district, having been chairman of tho Lower Heathcote school for three years, and from his well known business ability he should make a very eligible candidate.
