CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, August 27. [Before G. L. Mellish, Esq., B.M.] Daui’K and Disoedeely. —Two drunkards were each fined 10s, and one first offender ss. False Peetbnoes. —Richard Woods, remanded from Wellington, was charged with obtaining goods under false pretences to the value of £2 6s ICi, the property of George Ritchie. There were two other charges of breaking into and entering the Durham street Wesleyan Church and schoolroom, and steeling therefrom money and goods the property of the trustees. On the application of Mr Inspector Hickson tho prisoner was remanded until Monday, September Ist. LYTTELTON. Wednesday, August 27. (Before J. Beswick, Esq., R.M., and T. H. Potts, Esq, J.P.J Lunacy from: Deink. —George Williams having recovered from this malady, was discharged. Refusal op Duty.—James Boyce was charged with this offence, committed on board the Himalaya. Mr J. Joyce appeared for the ship. The chief officer gave evidence as to the refusal. The ship, ho said, would not likely go to sea for two months. Tho accused said in defence it was after four o’clock at the time, and tho mate told him to put on tho fore hatches. Ho repeated tho order, but accused was hanging out some clothes at the time, after which ho would have obeyed. In consideration of it being a second offence the accused was sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment, two days’ pay to bo forfeited. Absent Without Death. Norman McLeod was charged with being absent without leave from his ship, the Doohra. Mr Joyce appeared for the ship. T. D. Wilkins, acting chief officer, said accused was carpenter on board, and at about noon yesterday he went away and did not return until 3 p.m., an hour after he should have been on duty. Twice before he had acted similarly, and had been cautioned. Ho offered no excuse for his absence. His previous conduct had been good in other respects. Tho accused said the captain had given him both money and liberty. Ho had no intention of deserting. All the other men had the liberty to go ashore when not on duty. The Bench fined him two days’ pay, and ordered him back to Ids ship. Oitil Business. —Shaw v Columbus, claim £7 12s; Mr Nalder for plaintiff; judgment for plaintiff, with one month’s time to pay it. with costs and counsel’s fee. J. Duff V James Penny, claim £1 5s ; judgment by default. Gerard v Piorcj, claim £6 19s 6d j Mr Nalder for defendant; nonsuited with costs, plaintiff having filed a declaration o£ insolvency.
