On Saturday an altercation occurred at tho Mount Cook Gaol between Colonel Reader and Mr James Mackay in respect to tho Natives. Mr Mackay demands an inquiry, which it is expected will take place tomorrow. WANGANUI, August 25. A lire occurred at four o’clock yesterday morning, which burned down Mr Barlow’s boarding-house, Victoria Avenue. Mr Barlow’s family and twenty lodgers lost everything. There was nothing to show how the fire originated. Spriggin’s bootshop, next door, was in flames, but the brigade got them under. Mr Barlow’s house is insured for £2OO, tho furniture for £250. Mr Spriggin’s stock is insured for £350 in the Transatlantic, and £4OO in the South British. The stock is considerably damaged by fire and water.

A Sad OccurrenceYesterday afternoon the body of Mr Jol n Rhodes Pearson was found divested of pir; of the clothing, and lying in a ditch near Starvation Hill and the water flowing over it. It appears'that deceased left Oxford on Saturday evening at seven o'clock, on horseback. His hat was found almost a mile from the Post Office near Fairfield Farm. His coat, trowsers, boots, and socks were lying on the line. His horse made its way to Carlton station. The inquest will be held at 2 p.m. to-day. The occurrence has cast a gloom over the district. NEW PLYMOUTH, August 25. Hall and Hinaki again escaped from gaol this morning, and have not yet been recaptured. They escaped in the same manner as they did a fortnight ago. Electoral.
