NEWS OF THE DAY.
Abbxyai op Sib Gbobgk Gbby.—Sir George G-rey arrive I at the ra ; \way station at 1 p.m., by special train. He was accompanied by tho Hon. J. T. Fisher, and, on reaching the platform, was received by his Worship the Mayor and the members of the City Council. The Mayor said: "On behalf of the citizens of Christchurch I have the honovr to welcome you on your arrival in this city." Sir Q-eorge Grey said—" Mr Mayor,—l thank you for your kindly reception. I assure you that I shall do all I can for the interests of Chrietchurch." Three cheers were then given for Sir George, and he then proceeded to Ooker's Hotel, where luncheon was served at the invitation of the Mayor. The Association at the Thbatbb.— As will be seen by advertisement the members of the Liberal Reform Association are invited to " roll up " at the Theatre to-r'ghfc. Government Advebtising.—At the procession from the railway station to-day it was a beautiful sight to see the principal proprietor of the Government advertising machine welcoming his chief. If tears of gratitude did not flow in streams from his oyee, it was only becaufis a too critical public were watching the historical event. As it was the publio basked in the smiles of the two great men. B.M. CotrsT. —Tho only case before the Court this morning was that of a man named Thomas Mitchell. He had been remanded on a charge of drunkenness, and has spent the intermediate time in tho Hospital under treatment for injuries received in his head while indulging in conviviality. He was now brought up pronounced convalescent, and in consideration of the circumstances was discharged with a caution, his sufferings being taken as an equivalent for punishment. iNTEEFBOVINCIAIi FOOTBAMi MATCH.—In reply to a request from some of the leading citizens, the Mayor of Christchurch requests that next Monday may be kept as a holiday, in order that tradesmen and their employes may witness the football match between Otago and Wellington. Bell Hat.—The remains of the late Dr. Bell Hay were yesterday followed to the grave in the Church of England Cemetery by the whole of the medical profession and a very large gathering of private friends.
Tbacbb op Vbnnbll. —A large body of police were again diligently employed yester* day in searching for the body of the missing man "Vennell. A large piece of blanket wan taken out of tbe river near his house, and has been identified by Mrs Vennell aB having belonged to her husband. If an organised body of volunteer searchers would lend their aid to the police, it would materially increase the probability of finding the remains of the missing man, if he has come to an untimely end.
Theatbb Boyal.—" Struck Oil " was still attractive enough to command a fair house at the Theatre Boyal last night. This evening additional attractions are offered by the performance being under the patronage of Sir George Grey, who has promised to visit the theatre. The Chaplin-Osbobnb Compaht. Mr Walter Bishop arrived yesterday by the s.s. Taiaroa as agent for Mr B. J. De Lias, for the purpose of making arrangements for the forthcoming dramatic season with Mr G. Chaplin and Misß Hose Osborne as the " stare. Mr Di Lias has taken the Gaiety Theatre, and the new company will make their first appearance about the end of the month, in Shakspeare's tragedy of " Hamlet." POBTBAIT OF THE LATE WALTEB HILL. — Mr E. Djssetter, the well-known photographer, has produced a life-like portrait of thia lately deceased comedian. The picture, which measures 14in. by 15in., has been enlarged from a sarte de visite, and beautifully worked up in crayonß, and is strikingly like the deceased actor.
The Elections. —Thursday, the 28th of Au r »Bt, is fixed as the nomination day for tb.3 electoral district of Avon, and the poll will tike' place on September 3rd. Nominations for the Selwyn district will take place on the 29th August, and the poll on the _sth September. The nomination for the Kaiapoi district will take place at Kaiapoi on Monday, September Ist, the polling at Kaiapoi, Kangiora, Woodend, and Eyreton on Tuesday, September 9th. The nomination for the Ashley district takes place on Thursday, September 4th, at Amberley, and the polling at Amberley, Sefton, Ashley Bank, West Eyreton, Oust, and Oxford on Thursday, September 11th. St. Michael's Entkbtainmsht. The usual fortnightly parish entertainment took place last night in St. Michael's schoolroom. The programme was as fo'lows: —Duet, pianoforte, " Euryanthe"; song, "1 watched for her in the starless night," Mr Corbett; part song, " Maydew," Messrs McOardell, Mcintosh, Appleby, Izard, Knight, Knox, Stansell, and Simma; reading, "Helterskelter," MrE. A. Worthy ; duet, "Sainted Mo'her" (" Maritana") ; part song, " Spring's Delights ; platfoim scene, "Hamlet," Bev. E. G. Penny, Messrs H. Ootterill, and G. Brittan; quintette, "Sorcerer"; reading, "Paddy the Piper," Dr. Ellis; song, "In happy moments," Mr Nicholls ; duet, pianoforte, and the National Anthem. The schoolroom was well filled, and the way the programme was gone through give unmixed satisfaction. The next entertainment will be gixen in a fortnight.
Lecture on AtjsibaliA.—Yesterday evening Mr Hugh Bennetts occupied the platform of the Templar Hall, Worcester street, for the delivery of a lecture on Australia and its resources. The lectura was an instructive one, ai.d contained a number of statistical facts in connection with its mineral, commercial, and agricultural wealth, collected during a personal visit. The lecture concluded with a sketch of Melbourne. The hall was fairly filled. Strange Discovert. —Yesterday afternoon some boys found a loaded pistol in a hedge between the residence of Mr Neck.the solicitor, in Selwyn street, Addington, and the Scotch Cemetery. The weapon, which is of antique construction, is a small armoury in itself, possessing a bayonet, a bullet mould, a receptacle for ammriition, and other conveniences. It must have been some time in the place where it was found, as it was covered with rust, and appeers not to have been used for a considerable period The owner can obtain it on application to the police. Mb Rolleston at Riccabton. Mr Rolleston addressed a well attended meeting of the electors of the Avon district at Riocarton last evening, at the Road Board office. Mr H. J. Hall occupied the chair. Mr Rolleston, who was warmly received, spoke for an hour and a helf, and the meeting toi-joinafed by a u"<"iiinnng vote of confidence »""'-0 J J -
Electoral Addresses.—Mr E. Or. Wright will this evening address the electors at Sheffield. Mr H. P. Murray-Aj a sley will address the electors of Lyttelton this evening at the Oddfel'ows' Hall. A special train will leave Christchurch at 6.45 p.m. for the convenience of electors from Christchurch desiring to attend the meeting. Mr W. S. Moorhouse will deliver his first address to the electors of Ashley at Ashley next Monday. On the succeeding nights he will deliver addresses at other centres of population in the district. Mdlle. Olga Duboin.—This celebrated artiste will make her first and only appearance in Christchurch this evening in the Oddfellows' Hall. An excellent programme has been adver. tiscd, and a treat of the highest musical order may be anticipated. St. John's Entertainment.—ln consequence of the elections, it has been deemed advisable to postpone the parish enteiiainment in connection with St. John's, which was advertised for this evening to a future date of which due notice will be given.
