This contest was continued yesterday evening, and visitors were constantly dropping in to see the play. Board No. 1. Rev. M. Ash agaiDst Mr Hookham. Mr Abli struck out with the Scotch gambit, which was mot by Mr Hoofcham's well-known " waiting style," and no impression could be made by either party until about ten o'clock, when the exchange was won by Mr Hookham, and, after an uphill fight, Mr Ash resigned. At board No. 2, Mr Janion v Mr Hay, the latter made the French Defence against Mr Junion's vigorous style of opening. A piece, not being properly supported, was lost by the West Coast champion by 9.30, after which he got up a very strong attack, but could not maintain it, and gave up on the fifty-seventh move. At board 3 Mr Teel contended against Mr Newman, who soon lost a piece, but, by patient play, regained his position by the time the adjournment took Elace. This game was Btill in progress at a ito hour. At board 4> a short encounter took place, Mr Jacobsen having to fight against the strong play shown in this contest by Mr Bray. He made a sound defence, but, unable to resist capturing a pawn, he fell into trouble, and his game went to pieces at an early atago. The score so farstands as follows: Games won—Mr Bray., 3 ; Mr Hookham, 2i; Mr Jacobsen, 2 ; Mr Hay, H : Mr Ash, 1 j Mi JaiioD, 0.
