T A brisantino from the South was siguallod to-day whon our despatch left port. THE S.S. PENGUIN. EThQ Union Steamship Company's recent purchaso, the s.s. Penguin, arrived at Port Chalmers on Monday. Captain W. H Braddock, who piloted out the s.s. Wuuaka, brought the Penguin to her destination, making the passage in seventy-six days, including a stoppage of five days at St. Vincent, fonr days at the Cape of Good Hope, and three days at Hobart Town. The Stad Haarlem wa3 at St Vincent when the Penguin called there, and letters were exchanged. As will bo gleaned from tho following description, the new arrival is a Bteamer of a superior class, one in which it will be a comfort to travel:—The Penguin is Cft longer than tho Hawed, and has 2ft Gin nioro beam, giving a fine roomy deck. There is a spaci us poop-deek •with comfortably fitted sinokiug room, situated between two large skylights, which afford abundance of light and ventilation to tho saloon below. Tho saloon differs from all others in tho company s boats, tho entrance being directly from tho main dock In tho entrance are three largo cabins denominated " bridal chambers," they aro comfortably fitted up, and aro extremely roomy, and will bo eagerly sought for by ladies who aro travelling with their families; indeed, these state-rooms are extremely suitable for such purposes. A wide and lofty ontranco lea-Is to tho saloon, the latter being filled with enclosed borths, capable of accommodating 51 persons ; in addition to this tho transoms will also make room for a number more. Tho sido cabins have each throe berths m them, and aro amply furnished with toilet requisites. Tho side ■partitions dividing the cabins from tho bouy of tho saloon are of polished oak pannelling, picked out with bluo and gold. A cabin specially for ladios, with accommodation for eight, connects with tho saloon, tho contiguous rooms boiug reserved for them whenever this cabin is fall. At tho dining tables, which run fore and aft, sitting accommodation is provided for her full complomont of passengers. In the comfort lino, and directly adjoining the saloon, is a very replete pantry, fitted with steam boilers, heaters, &c. Bath-rooms aro to bo addod. For steerage passengers tho cabin is forward, is well fitted, and includes a separato cabin for ladies. The vessel is fitted with a steam windlass and two steam winches for working cargo. Sho is of 442 tons register, is rigged as a topsail schooner, her engine power consisting of two surface condensing low pressure, each of 180 h.p. nominal. Tho bost speed attained by her during tho ran out has been 13 knots, and tho ayorago speed throughout has been 12J knots, and on a maximum consumption of 22 tons of coal per diem. Built in 1864, by Todd and McGregor, of Glasgow, specially for tho trado botween Liverpool and that port, the Penguin was constructed of the bost material manufactured, and with a view to speed combined with strength; and in theso roBpects, as well as of her passenger conveniences, the steamer will compare creditably with any on the coast. Sho is advertised to mako her maiden coastal trip in New Zealand waters this week, leaving hero on Saturday for Wellington.
