NEWS OF THE DAY.

A Clean Sheet.—There were no cases brought up in the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day. Chbistchurch Ratepayers' Association. —We are requested to stat 9 that the meeting of the above this evening is not a public one as stated, but a first meeting of the membars of the association. Works Committee.—A meeting of the works committee of the City Council was held this morning. A letter was received from the Local Board of Health with one from Mr Strickland Field as to the state of Lumb's lane. From the Avon Road Boa; 3, a letter was received advising that the footpath be reduced in width on the North town belt and shingled; also that the culvert at Carlton place be lengthened and lowered. The surveyor was instructed to carry out the work a-i far as possible. Several other matters received attention. The Missing Man.—The search for the man Yennel, who has been missing since the 6th of August, has been prosecuted most rigorously, but no traces of the absent man have been discovered. Some circumstances of a suspicious nature hare come to light, however. It appears that on inspecting the house occupied by Yennel (which stands in an isolated position) the window of the front room was found to be broken, the result of a gunshot apparently, as the marks of eighteen shots were found on the opposite wall; also some stains of blood were discovered on the table and on the floor, and some pieces of the table cloth had been cut away. Several articles, known to be in the house when Yennel occupied it, were missing, including a small box such as would be used for keeping money or valuables in. From inquiry, however, it does not appear that the missing man had more than £9 or £lO in the house, if so much. The circumstances above alluded to may point to a suspicion of foul play. Mdllb. Olga Dtxboin.—As already stated this lady, who, as a pianiste has won golden opinions from musical critics wherever she has appeared, will make her debut before a Christehurch audience on Friday evening at the Oddfellows ' Hall. The critiques in the Australian journals are most glowing—and the admiration of the journalists appears to have been nearly as much excited by Madlle's costume —a Russian Court one—as by her wonderful power of interpretation of the themes selected. However, all agree in pronouncing Mdlle. Duboin one of the most talented rrtistes that has ever visited the colonies, and no doubt a large number of our musical connoiseurs will attend on Friday evening in order to judge for themselves. Town Hall Designs.—The gentlemen appointed as a committee to consider the question of acoepting a design for a town hall from among those submitted will meet at the City Council chambers to-day, when the report of the sub-committee will be received. The sub-committee, at a meeting held last week, resolved not to recommend any of the designs for the premium, ei none of them came within the conditions imposed as to cost of erection. Under these circumstances, it is possible that the Council will go to the ratepayers for power to expend £30,C30, instead of the sum originally resolved upon. For that amount it is said a very suitable and handsome building could be erected on the plan of one of the designs submitted. The Election Whits.—lt will be seen from to-day's telegrams that the writs for the general election were issued yesterday, and are made returnable on September 17th. Juvenile Troubadours. There was another good attendance at the Theatre Royal last night, when " Conrad and Lizette" and " Patchwork " were repeated for the last time, and went with the usual eclat. This evening, the celebrated drama "Struck Oil" will be produced, supported by the company, who will introduce a variety of new songs and dances. The Prhmier's Visit.—The Mayor has issued a circular inviting tho members of the City Council and officials to a private luncheon at Ooker's Hotel, to meet the Premier on his arrival on Friday next. A postscript intimates that it is to be nnderstood Bimply as an act of courtesy to the Premier, and strictly nonpolitical. St. Michael's Choball Society.—There will be no practice this evening. The next practice will take place on Tuesday, the 26th instant. Oddfellowship.—The Loyal Avon Lodge, 1.0.0. F., American Constitution, wi'l hold a degree meeting to-morrow evening, when the degree of Kebekah will be conferred on a number of brethren. This is intended to be an instruction in the working of the degree prior to its being conferred on a number of ladies by the R.W.G.M., Bro. Wheeler, and the Grand Lodge officers during the session of tho Grand Lodge in September. The Chbistchubch Election.—The Hon. E. Richardson's committee will meet every evening at seven o'clock, at tho committee rooms in the Triangle, next to tho premises of Messrs Royse, Stead and Co. Mr Stevens' committee will hold their meetings every evening at seven, at the rooms (late Lewis' froit shop) in Cathedral square, opposite tho Bank of New Zealand. The Elections. —Mr Rolleston will address the electors of Avon this evening at the old schoolroom, Papanui. To-morrow, Mr E. G. Wright will address the electors of Coleridge at Ashburton, and on Thursday the Hon. Mr Richardson will address tho city electors at the Oddfellows' Hall. Mr J. E. Brown announces elsewhere his retirement from tho contest for the representation of Ashley. Philosophical Institute.—Tho next of the series of lectures in connection with tho Philosophical Institute will be delivored by Mr Edward Dobson, C.E., in tho science lecture room of tho College on Thursday evening. Tho subject chosen is " Constructive Art in the Homeric Age." Liberal Reform Association.—A meeting of the members of the above will be held this evening at the Oddfellows' Hall. St. Michael's Entertainments. —The next of the series is advertised to take place on Thurday evening next. A better programme than his been given yet both as regards musical items and readings has been provided, and as the price of admission is very low, and the object a good one, there ought to be a good attendance.
