INTERPBOVINCIAL CRICKET MATCHES, NOTES BY " NOT OUT."
The elevonth match was played at Dunedin on the 13th and 14th January, 1874, and this year Canterbury was very badly repreaented; in fact, at leaat fonr of the team would not in ordinary circumstances been in a second eleven. Otago, however, in the previous year were just as unfortunate, bo that matters were balanced in this respect. Canterbury introduced one good player to its ranks in these matches in C. Barker, who was one of the moat punishing batsmen we have seen : he was, however, not a first class field. Otago had a good representative in Paramor B professional, from Scotland, and Q. Lynch; the latter played a fine inninga, and has since turned out to be a good bowler, but has changed his residence to Auckland. Otago won the toss, and sent Canterbury to the wickets, 0. Barker and J. Dawe being the first to defend the sticks, Paramor and Downes commenced the attack, but Barker soon caused the former to hand the ball to Beade. Dawe ran himself out with the sooro at 21, and Barker, after making 29 out of 32, was caught in the long field. Cotterill and Fowler appeared to be set, but the latter played a short one back to the bowler and retired, three wickets falling for 64. Hill ran himself out, and Cotterill and Souter in some unaccountable way ran against one another, and before they could recover the effects of the blow Cotterill was run out, Souter was unable to continue his innings nntil later in the game, After this, with the exception of FnllerJ no stand was made, and the total only reached 78. Fuller made 15 very quickly, a 6 being amongst his hits. Otago commenced their innings with J. Allen and Lynch, but the former quickly made way for Eeade, and now one of the finest displays of batting seen in these contesta took place, The bowling was repeatedly changed, but without effect—it is true that it was of the most simple character—of which the batsmen took every advantage, just before the IGO appeared Beade was caught for a good innings of 38. Lynch wa3 immediately afterwards bowled by a «low for a fine innings of 61, which included Borne good hits, especially a grand off drive for 5. Fuller now seemed to have become used to the ground, us he certainly had not been bowling well up to this time, but now was well on, and the wickets fell quickly. Tait was the only one who seemed able to play Fuller after Beade and Lynch had gone. The total at the fall of last wicket was 144, Tait being not out for a steady 21. There being half an hour yet to the time - fixed for drawing the wickets, Canterbury began their second innings in a very bad light, the effect of which was soon seen, as five wickets quickly fell for eight runs. Upon resuming in the morning, a short stand was made by E, Fov/ler and Monck, but when they retired for 16 and 8 respectively, the end soon came, and 38 was the result of this inninga, thus leaving Otago victorious by an innings and 28 runs. The following is the score : CANTEBBUKY. First Inninga. Second Inninga.
Sam Small sauntered slowly scullerywards, supperless. Saw Sal Swift sitting silently shelling small sweet peas. Says Sam, snappishly, "Soma supper, Sally?" Says Sal, "S'poseso." Says Sam, "Stir smartly, Sal, Sam's starving." Says Sal, smilingly, "Some soup, Sam, sauer-kraut, sausages? Say something suits." Says Sam speedily, " Stir some shortcake. Some strawberries, syrup, sugar. Some such sweet stuff suits Sam." Sal stirred self stepped swiftly, spread sideboard speedily! supper soon stands smoking side Sam. Says Sam, Bheepishly, "Soon'a supper's swallowed shall say something, Sally." Sal sat stirring nweetmeats. Sam stole several sidelong squints Sally-wards. Sal started, simpered, stammered, saying, "Speak, Sam." Says Hum, "Shall select spouse sometime, Sally, s'po3e Sam'll suit 1 Shall Sam stand side Sal ? " Sal stole swiftly Sam's side, saying softly, "Sam suits Sally." Sam seized Sal's slender self, stole several 3weet smacks speedily, sealing Sal securely. Sal seemed supremely satisfied. So the story stops short.
