ARTFUL DODGERS.

To the Editor of the Globe. Sib, —A letter appeared in the “ Sta>-” of Friday and the “Times” of Saturday with the veiy appropriate heading “Another Dodge,” in which the writer pretends to criticise a small tract that questioned the sincerity of Sir George Grey’s professions of friendship for the working man. The evidently labored attempt of the scribe to adopt a colloquial working man’s stylo “with intent to deceive” is"a conspicuous failure, for any occasional reader of the trashy articles daily dished up in the morning luminary and the vituperative twaddle, too contemptible to be venomous, of its evening satellite which may be fitly characterised as “Begotten without thought, bom without pains, The ropy drived of rheumatic brains.” can sec through the thin disguise of the “penny-a-liner.” Not being able to refute any of the statements put forth in the tract, the whole letter is devoted to a silly tirade against tho supposed writer, whom it is pleased to stylo “ Old Thirty Years in New Zealand,” in which random guess the wou’dbe critic, having wandered beyond the range of the fitful glimmer of his penny rushlight, evidently stands great need of an extended application of the pretentious motto, “Fiat lux.” The only veracious part of tho sntire letter is its heading, for it is truly “ another dodge,” and not an uncommon one, for lowtoned journals to utilise their correspondence columns to abuse their opponents. Not desiring to appropriate the unmerited comp’ ; - ment of having written tho aforesaid tract, I am, &c ,
