At the Arcade meeting in Wellington a distinguished member of the landocracy wont up to a Liberal on the platform and hissed out between his teeth— ‘ You have stolen our flag. I have two pistols in my pocket ; meet me on the beach to-morrow at daylight, and I will fight you.’ Tho Liberal was ono of that distinguished profession whoso arguments are their only weapons. It is needless to say that ho did not comply with the landocrat’s desire for pistol practice.” A New Beigade. —A novel institution, in the shape of a brigade of “ lady dusters and charwomen for church duty,” has been established at Aylesbury. Unregistered Dogs at Ashburton. — Yesterday twenty-five cases of keeping unregistered dogs wore disposed o£ by the Ashburton Eesident Magistrate. Fines oE £1 with costs were inflicted iu the majority of cases, but many fell through owing to the information setting forth that the dogs were “in the following” of the parties accused, while tho evidence only proved the animals had beenjfound on defendants’ premises. Street Crossings. —Since the wet weather set in the streets of tho city (to say nothing of suburban localities) have been in a deplorable state. One of tho worst places is that part of the South Town Belt near the railway station. There the road is almost impassable—that is to say, it is hopeless attempting to cross without getting ankle deep in mud, and such a thing as a comparatively clean crossing is not to bo found.

Kaiapoi Land Tax Assessment. —The Court for hearing objections to the assessment for the land tax of borough property, was held in the Magistrate’s Court on Friday, before Mr Whitetoord, Judge. Messrs Ritso and Dudley appeared on behalf of the Commissioner. The amendments were very trifling, except in tho case of one appellant, a plank of whose platform at a recent election was “Tax the land,” who objected to his assessment of £1440, or at tho rate of £2OO per acre, it being slated on his behalf that he had offered the property for sale to Mr B. O. Latter, the Commissioner of Land Tax, for £I2BO. Mr Ritso said his instructions were to offer no opposition. The item was reduced to the latter sum.

Journal of Commerce. —Under the title of the “ Canterbury Journal of Commerce and Prices Current,” the first number of a publication, the scops of which may be gathered from its name, has been issued. It is intended to publish it in time for the San Francisco mail each month. The matter is carefully compiled, and is specially arranged to convey to Home readers an accurate statement of the markets, &c., iu all branches of trade and commerce. It is very neatly printed, and altogether will be found to supply a want long felt here by the mercantile community. Wesleyan Church, Colombo Road. — An entertainment of considerable interest took place on Thursday evening. It was provided entirely by juveniles, and consisted of songs, recitations, dialogues, and instrumental music. There were nearly thirty items on the programme, which was carried out with marvellous proficiency on the part of the young people. The audience nearly filled tho large church, and manifested thoir admiration by unstinted applause. The children had thoir tea at tho residence of tho Eev. J. 8. Smalley before the meeting. The sacred melody, entitled “ The Sweet By and Bye,” concluded the entertainment. It is intended to repeat it at an early date.
