WHAT SIR GEORGE GREY HAS DONE.
Why was J.J. specially favoured by Sir George Grey in the creation of this “ big estate ?” Because the influence of the said J.J. was wanted to induce a certain Wellington resident (agent of the aforesaid J.J.) to enter ■the Governor’s Nominee Council, all the ■leading men of Wellington having declined seats in the said Council. Who reduced the price of the waste lands to 5s and 10s per acre at a time when the laboring man could not take advantage of the low price, and speculators were enabled to monopolise largo tracts ? Sir George •Obex! So much in connection with the land legislation of the colony by the now professed champion of the poor “down trodden serf,” the working man. Who burked a Liberal Constitution Act for -New Zealand passed by the Imperial Parliament ? Sir George Grey ! Who tried to substitute another in lieu thereof, reserving to himself the right to nominate one-third of the seats in the proposed Provincial Councils ? The very liberal 'Sir George Grey !
Who vilified and denounced the Canterbury settlement because its loading men were instrumental in rejecting tho aforesaid liberal Provincial Council Ordinance ? Sir George Grey 1
Who procured the reo ill of LieutenantGovernor Byre for sympathising with the settlers in their efforts to obtain a liberal form of Government ? Sir George Grey !
Who, when the second and p-esent Constitution Act was received in the colony, delayed its introduction as long as possible, and left the colony in preference to bringing tho, to him obnoxious, Act fully into operation ? Sir George Grey !
Who has since tried to play upon the presumed ignorance of the public by confounding •his own abortive Act with Sir John Pakington’s, and claimed the paternity of the latter ? -Sir George Grey!
Who refused the Commissioners tho use of tho Government steamer on the plea of danger of tho Natives, when in reality the vessel was wanted to convey him upon an election stumping tour round tho colony? Sir Gbobgb Grey!
Who tried to veto a liberal land Act after it had been passed by his own Government ? Sir George Grey !
Who promised to put 70,000 of tho working classes upon tho electoral rolls, and after carrying a Bill through Parliament for this purpose, withdrew it because he was not allowed to swamp a number of Northern constituencies by his dual Maori vote ? Sir George Grey!
Who has committed the colony to a quarter of a million of railway expenditure, not authorised by Parliament ? Sir Georgs Grey !
Who allowed one of his Ministry to proceed to England to arrange a gigantic land speculation, on his own account, at a cost to the public of £2OOO ? Sir George Grey ! Who, after all his previous tergiversation and mal-adminiatration of the affairs of the colony, proposes to perpetrate a stupendous insult upon the whole of Canterbury by professing a desire to represent a portion of the colony he has systematically traduced and slandered from the foundation of the settle - ment to the present time ?
