KAIPOI BOROUGH SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of this committee wm ' held on Monday last. Present —Messrs Johnaton (chairman), Bevell, Pashby, Toung, and Mathews. Letters were read from the Board of Education in reference to the necessity for care in keeping the register; authorising acceptance of tenders for levelling the site for the master’s house ; stating that the register grates would be nut in the school •as soon as funds would aamit; enclosing 'returns for the year ending June, 1879, reporting that tbe average attendance for the Kaiapoi school was 260. From the Borough Council, as a Board of Health, requesting the committee to abate the nuisance arising fom water lying on tbe school grounds. On the motion of Mr Mathews, seconded by Mr Pashby, it was resolved— •* That the attention of the Board be drawn to the want of drainage, and the letter be forwarded to the Board.” From the head master, forwarding returns .showing the number on the roll to be 410 and the average daily attendance 260. It was decided to defer consideration cf the question of the penny savings bank. Accounts to the amount of £3 8s lOd were passed. The chairman reported th t, in consequence of reported .diphtheria in the caretaker’s family, he had ordered the isolation of the patients, and given permission to use the committee room for that purpose, which room ought to be included in the caretaker’s cottage. It was resolved—“ That the committee room be included in the caretaker’s cottage accommodaition, and that the committee hold its meetings •in one of the school class rooms.” It was decided—“ That the secretary recommend to the Board the advisability of holding the examination as soon as possible, in order.that the repairs might bo gone on with while the school was closed.” Mr. Revell suggested that in future the holidays be held at Christmas, April, and August, so as to give those children who were useful during the harvest an opportunity to do the work required _ of them during the holidays. The committee then .adjourned.
