THE CIRCASSIANS.

A correspondent writing to us from Smyrna, May 11th, Bays : —" Ab if to complete the spits of fate, at the back of tho locusts come the Circassians —a greater ill, perhaps, for, after all, the locusts will go off some day, while the Circassians threaten to be with us always. Government evidently expected these gentlemen to settle down to agricultural and other peaceful pursuits, otherwise, reckless of it 3 interests as it is generally appears to bo, it would never have consented to add to the burthen that already so heavily presses upon our native peasantry by the introduction into their midst of this lawless element. As it is, whatever occupation Government intended them to follow, tho Circassians for tho present seem to find plundering in general and horse-stealing in particular more to their taste. It has already become hazardous to travel in the interior, even along the post roads, through the operation of these pretty colonists. Later on, when they become familiarised to their surroundings, and when the sense of being on their good behaviour in the quality of guests on sufferance wears off, I suppose wo shall scarcely dare show our noses out of the town. The sale of firearms to the Circassians is, I am told, about the briskest business going jußt now. Within the past month four new shops for the sale of English and American revolvers of the latest patterns have been started to my knowledge, and I havo no doubt the demand would support as many more. In the name of common sense why do not tho authorities Btop this traffic? One can see with half an eye that in arming themselves these people have mischief in view."
