LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. Wednesday, Augitsx 6. In reply to Taiaroa, Colonel WmxaiOEß said the Maori prisoners •will be tred by the ordinary process of law in October. A largo amount of formal business was distposed of. There was a long discussion on the action of the Government re the Thames railway. On the motion of Mr Watebhousb, the •Council passed a resolution strongly condemning the action of the Government as a direct violation of the law. Messrs Waterhouse, Pollen, and Hall severely commented on the illegal action of the Government, which had been done solely to buy political support. Colonel Whixmobb contended that the action of the Government was perfectly legal. Mr Stout and others had been of opinion that the Government were perfectly justified. Sir E. D. Bbdi> tabled a motion that the Government should be prevented from handling the new loan. Tho Council adjourned at 5 p.m. to 7.30 p.tn. EVENINGSITIING. On resuming at 7.30, The Council, on tho motion of Sir P. D. Bell, agreed to an address to the Governor stating that the new Parliament should be called as early as possible to appropriate the new loan. On the motion for the second reading of the Loan Bill, Mr Watbbhouse said the colony was borrowing far beyond its means, and was ' tending towards bankruptcy.
