Cbay Pishins.— On Saturday a small boat of about three tons burthen left the Kaiapoi for Motanau Island, in charge of a man named Beatty, and ac assistant, for tho purpose of obtaining cray-fish. The project is not looked on as likely to bo very successful ; in fact, the men run a considerable risk in venturing into the open sea with this boat, which is only 23ft. long and sft. lOin. in beam.

Lyttelton Permanent L.,8.,&T. Society. —After tho ordinary monthly meeting of the Lyttelton Permanent Land, Building, and Investment Society at the Colonists' Hall, Lyttelton, at 6 p.m. tomorrow, a general meeting of shareholders is to be held, at which one auditor is to be appointed and two committeemen elected. The Railway Cojimissioneh.—The following telegrams in connection with tho Dunedin petition for tho removal of tho Commissioner of Railways have been received by the Chamber of Commerce: "Wellington. Americanisms. —There is a good deal of genuine wit floating up and down American newspapers. When the " Camden Post" saya a man's character is like a fence—you cannot strengthen it by whitewash, "it gives us a genuine epigram." Quite as felicitous, too, is this from the " Cincinnati Breakfast Table" —"A tack points heavenward when it means the most mischief; it has many human imitators." A bright turn to a familiar quotation is given by the " Biddeford Miniature," thus :—" I am thy father's spirit, as the pint flask said to the inquisitive urchin who had been investigating tho cupboard." Mr Talmage having claimed that hell has four gates, the " Buffalo Express" hopes they open outward, so as to give easy egress in case of fire. The " Hackeiiaack Republican" gave a witty conceit when it said last fall—" Th» loaves of trees, like summer boarders with bill unpaid, take their departure, leaving their old trunks behind them." The fo"owi gis evidently stolen from tho English, At dinner tho host introduces to the favourable notice of the company a splendid truffled phesiant amid murmurs •'admiration. "Isn't it a beauty," he says : " Dr. So-and-so gave it to me —killed it himself." "Aw, what was he treating it for ?" said one of the guests. This, which is going the roundi without credit, bears evidence of origin in the New York World:—"A thorn in the bush is worth a dozen in hand."
