When Mr Bryce sent in his report on the Bay of Islands roll stuffing scandal, tho Premier immediately ordered Mr Edward Williams, Resident Magistrate at the Bay of Islands, to send in his resignation The gentleman has been consulting his friends and thinking the matter over, as to whether ho should obey the Premier’s mandate or demand an inquiry. Owing to the unfavorable turn for Sir George and his party which politics have taken lately, Sir George has not ventured upon dismissing Mr Williams. Mr Keas is in a wretched state ever since he found that his name is not on the electoral roll. Mr Sheehan has had a number of telegrams asking him to represent various constituencies. Sir G. Grey’s letter to Sir W. Fox ri Electoral Representation and Chinese Immigration Bills was a ruse to evade a dissolution or to throw on the Opposition the odium of obstructing popular measures. A; the caucus of Government supporters held in the Whips’ room, Parliamentary Buildings, at half-past throe, thirty-three members wore present, the Premier in the chair. Sir G. Grey laid bis views before the meeting, and reported the result of the Opposition caucus held this morning, to resist the Representation and Electoral B lls. After lengthy discussion, the Ministerial supporters agreed that tbo=c measures should be dropped this session, and that tho Government should only ask tho House to pass the Loan Bill and throe months’ supplies. Tho question of tho date of tho elections was discussed. The Premier uracd that writs should be made returnable in September, so that the elections may be conducted on the new electoral rolls. It was ultimately agreed to support tho Premier’s proposals. Some of the Opposition say that Sir G. Grey is not altogether pleased at tho prospect of dissolution, and it is notorious that SOUIO of hi 3 supporters did not desiro it.
