SIR GEORGE BOWEN AT MAURITIUS.

We (“ Argua ”) haye received from Mauritius the special supplement to the “ Mercantile Record and Commercial Gazette” of April 28th, containing an account of the arrival and reception of the new Governor, Sir George Bowen, together with the addresses that had been presented to his Excellency, and his replies thereto. In order to mark the auspicious occasion the “ special supplement” is printed in golden characters. Sir George Bowen’s cordiality of manner seems to have exercised at Port Louis the same agreeable influence it has produced elsewhere on a first acquaintance. The “ Sentinel of Mauritius” dwells with satisfaction on the “ open countenance and graceful manners of our new Governor,” and of the “ outspoken frankness ” of his language. The “Sentinel,” indeed, goes so far as to declare that “ Sir George Bowen, with his frank and open physiognomy and the boldness of his language, made so favorable an impression on all that we can safely say he has at one bound gained the good wishes of the community ; and we are not overstepping the mark by predicting that wo may look up to him ‘to see and judge for himself,’ to govern our destinies with a firm and impartial hand, and to hold the balance even among all the subjects of her Majesty in this colony.” The same paper says : —“ Lady and the Misses Bowen, by their simple and modest attire no loss than by the distinction of their attitude, have also gained the sympathies of all those whose happy lot it was to witness the installation of Sir George Bowen as Governor of Mauritius.”
