AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION.
The usual monthly meeting of the •Canterbury .Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held at the offices, Hereford street, yesterday afternoon at two o’clock, Mr J. T. •Ford in the chair. The minutes of the preyious meeting haring been read and confirmed, a letter was road from Mr Johnston, manager of the Now Zealand To an and Mercantile -Agency Company, intimating that the company would give a silver cup, to bo offered as a prize at the forthcoming show, with the object of improving the breed of the sheep or the class of wool. In reference to this, the committee passed a resolution to the effect —“ That the committee of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association desire to thank the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company for their liberal offer of a cup, and suggest that it be given this year to the largest prize-taker in merino sheep, and the committee would respectfully remind the company that, owing to the permanent position of this association, the continuance of this prize as an annual event would very materially tend to promote the object in view, and would afford an opportunity to this association to continue the prize from year to year as circumstances will permit.” Tetters were received acknowledging receipt of the association’s “Draught Horse Stud Book,” and one of the writers (Mr Riddell), for services rendered the association, was elected a life member thereof. In reference to a letter from Mr Stead, complaining of the regulations for horses on show days, it was resolved that no departure from the rules adopted would be advisable. An application from the Christchurch Football Club for the association’s ground for a match ehortly to bo played was declined. •On the motion of Mr Duncan, it was ■resolved to accept Mr Bishop’s offer of £2 2s towards a prize of five guineas, to be given ■ for the best New Zealand manufactured tweeds, and a committee was appointed to arrange the terms upon which the exhibits should be entered. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Wilkin, that three copies of Dr. Haast’s work, “ The Geology of Canterbury,” be distributed as a prize at the show. Business of an administrative character was transacted, after which the committee entered upon the consideration of the election of judges for the forthcoming show. Notices of Motion—Mr B. Wilkin gave notice that at .the next meeting he would move —“‘That a new prize in draught -stuck be instituted, to be called the “Oaks Sweepstakes,” for yearling fillies to be shown at the annual show in .1880.’ ‘ That nominations for the same be 'received up to Ist January, 1880, inclusive.’ ■ s That the fee at nomination be £l, and that • the usual entry fees be charged at the proper time.’ ‘That the whole of the nomination fees be given in prizes to the class, with or •without such additional sum from ordinary funds as the committee may determine.’ * That no nomination be received unless it contains a minute description of colour, markings, peculiarities and pedigree of the filly nominated.’ ‘That before the judging of this class takes place, a sub-committee should examine each entry to test the accuracy of the description given at time of nomination, and that any filly not corresponding with the description given be deemed ineligible and thrown out of the class.’ ”
