WELLINGTON, Augnt 1. Appointments. Mr W. Frazer, R.M. and Warden of the Thames, has resigned all his offices in the civil service, and Mr H. Kenrick, R.M., has been appointed R.M. and Warden for the District of Han-aki. Mr B. Pearce is gazetted as Lieutenant-Colonel of the New Zealand Militia.

OAMARU, August 1. Dreadful Accident on the Water-race. A fatal accident occurred last evening at one of the tunnels on the water-race. Three men, named Patrick Ford, Patrick Markham, and Paul Fitzpatrick were engaged in fining the tunnel with masomy, when a tremendous fall of eailh occurred, at five o’clock, completely burying them. A large number of men at once gathered together, formed themselves into relays and commenced to work at getting the men out. This was found difficult owing to the frequent falls of earth. Ford was rescued at five o'clock this morning. He was alive but his left thigh was broken. Markham and Fitzpatrick are not yet on L . No hopes are entertained of their being alive. They must have been killed at once. DUNEDIN, August 1. Electoral. Captain Baldwin stands for one of the goldfield oonstituences. It is expected that there will be at least a dozen city candidates. Three Maoris, charged with ploughing Mr Bay ley’s land at Taranaki, were brought up to-day and committed for trial at the Wellington Supreme Court. Mr Bayley gave evidence. During the month of July, 1879, oighlyfiye births and twenty-two deaths wore registered in Wellington. Thirty-eight marriage certificates were issued. Mr Sherwood, who is hero on business connected with the Patea Harbor Board, has succeeded in floating a loan of £IO,OOO at seven per cent. TIMARU, July 31. During the month of July, 43 births, 20 deaths, and 7 marriages were registered in Timaru. The Harbor Board resume possession of the Government Landing Service to-morrow, and will work it themselves in future. The quarterly Education returns show 2833 children on the rolls, as against 2602 last quarter. Three new schools have been opened. Captain Sutter was the only person nominated for Mayor of Timaru, in place of Mr Cliff, resigned. DHNBDIN, July 31. Mr Hc-my Houghton, shipowner, has been appointed a member of the Otago Harbor Board, in the room of Mr Hugh McNeil resigned. The Benares enquiry will bo held to-mor-row before Mr Watt, R.M., with Captain Thomson, of the Bluff, and Captain Briscoe, of the barque Victoria, as nautical assessors. It is understood that Mr O. S. Reeves, who recently contested the City, has been appointed to the scat on the Land Board vacant by the resignation of Mr Thomson. The Education Board met to-day. Mr Donald Reid resigned his position ss School Commissioner, and Mr A. O. Begg was appointed to the vacant office. An inquest was held to-day on the body of Janet Clarke, who was killed by the Invercargill express on Tuesday last. A verdict of “ Accidental Death ” was returned.
