GENERAL ASSEMBLY.
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL, Thubsday, July 31. The New Zealand Law Societies Act, introduced by Mr Hart, was road a first time. The motion of Mr w atebhottsb, on the subject of payment of witnesses in land tax appeal cases, was postponed, Mr Waterhouse saying it might come under tho head “ Contested motions” alluded to in the Governor’s memorandum to Ministers. The formal business being disposed of, Colonel Whitmobb gave a brief resume of tho political situation, and said that till events resolved themselves, it was undesirable to proceed with the orders of the day. He therefore proposed an adjournment to Tuesday. Mr MiI.LEU said Colonel Whitmore should state the reasons why Ministers advised a dissolution in the present state of the country. Colonel Whitsiohe said he could pot with out orders lay tho confidential advice given by Ministers to tho Governor on tho table, especially as the subject was still pending. Mr Wathbhousb said it was most important to know Ministers’ reasons. He supported Mr Miller. . . Mr Millee then gave notice of motion for tbo information to bo laid on tho table, and the Council adjourned at 3.15 till Tuesday.
