THE UNEMPLOYED.
To the Editor of the GloOe.
Sib, — X notice in your i-sue of Wedndsday that the sum of £llß Us 41d was by the inhabitants of Christchurch to assist the unemployed in their time of need ; that £77 15s 9ld had been distributed, and the remainder, £4O 15s 7d, had been swallowed up in expenses. Now, sir, I think that many who subscribed to that fund would like to know something more about these expenses. It could not be supposed but that the collector should be paid, but it occurs to me that the sum of £27 for that item is outrageous. I should like to know how many collectors there were, and whether they were paid by the day or by commission on amount collected. I notice, also, the secretary receives £8 14s for his work, and £4 9s 7d are put down as sundries—the advertising being 12a. I was led to believe that the secretary was doing his work as a labour of love, and giving his office ns well for the good of his fellow men. Perhaps the secretary will kindly throw a little light on ti e:e matters. Yours, &0., ARGUS.
