MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Friday, August 1. [Before G. L. Melliab, Esq., R.M.] Debating a Nuisange.—James Webster and John Davis were each fined 5s for creating a nuisance at the railway station. Resisting tub Police. John Hawkes was charged with assaulting and resisting Constable Brookes in the execution of his duty. From tho evidence of Constable Brookes it appeared that the defendant, who was drunk, made use of very bad language, and was very violent when arrested. As the defendant had previously borne a good character, at the request of Inspector Hickson he was fined 5s for the drunkenness and Ids for the assault. Petty Laeceny.—A lad named William Easton was brought up on a charge of stealing lollies, of the value of 3d, from the shop of Samuel Mumford. He pleaded guilty. M!r Inspector Hickson said the boy’s father was dangerously ill in the hospital, and his mother wished the boy to bo sent to the Burnham Industrial School, as she was quite unable to control him. He was only twelve years of age, but utterly incorrigible. The boy was ordered to be sent to Burnham for two years. Stealing a Watch. —William Buchanan, remanded from the 31st ult., was charged with stealing a watch, value £2, the property of George Rossitor. Henry Paul, a woolwasher, living at Woolston, being sworn, stated that he was on a visit to Alexander Whitley’s house from the 22nd to the 25th August. On the 24th his birthday was kept. Prisoner was present, and presented one of Wbitl-y’s children with a watch. He noticed the figure of a ship or a steamer upon it. First saw Whitley’s child with the watch on tho 22nd or 23rd. Heard prisoner say he had won the watch at a raffle. This was tho evidence for the prosecution. The prisoner said he had bought the watch for 10s from a man at the Bank of New Zealand. There was no previous conviction against the prisoner, who was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labor, the watch to bo returned to the prosecutor. LYTTELTON. Friday, August 1. [Before J. Beswiok, Esq., R.M.j Drunk.—J, Hamilton was, on the testimony of Constable Moutray, fined 10s, with tho usual alternative, for this offence.

Absent Without Lbatb. — One of the crew of the barque Doohra, for being absent ■without leave, was, at the request of Captain Spalding, ordered to be sent on board. Steayb. —For permitting cattle to roam at large, Peter Fox was lined 5s and Edward Lee ss.

Civil,.—Hollis and Williams v, Muter, claim £2 10s 9d; judgment by default, with costs. Curtis t. Johnson, claim £1 3s 9i ; judgment by default, with costs.
