Eleven Hu -angi ploughmen were sentenced this morning to two months’ imprisonment in Dunedin Gaol, and each to find sureties to keep the peace for twelve months, themselves in £633 end two sureties in £3C3 each, or, in default, to be imprijonmed for twelve months. A party were ploughing at M- Turnbull’s farm, Huirangi, tins morning. TIMARU, July 28. At a meeting on Saturday of Canterbury footballers, North Canterbury being represented by their team, it was resolved that the association should play [under Rugby rr’es only. The barque Clan Campbell sails for Liverpool this afternoon with a full cargo of wheat. The brigantines James A. Stewart and the Ocoola are loading produce for Auckland, and will probably sail the middle of tho week. Mr John Macintosh, a farmer, has succeeded in getting trout to hatch out in a small pond. Tho are very healthy. Mr Fildes, who for the last five years has been manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Temuka, is to bo transferred to Tokomairiro. He will be presented with a testimonial before leaving. DUNEDIN, July 28. At the City Court to-a ay John Johnston was convicted on two charges of sly grogselling at Dunedin, and fined £25 and costs on each case. Notice of appeal was given. With reference to the case of Keast and McCarthy v. tho Corporation, the other cases were withdrawn pending an appeal. AUCKLAND, July 27. Joseph Hurnam was found dead in his house at Parnell. He had stabbed himself to the heart with a large clasp knife. Ha must have gone about the deed in a very deliberate manner, for not only had he secured the doors and windows, but had also propped one table behind a mirror, or at such an angle as to command a view of his recumbent body. After the wound had been inflicted he must have wiped the bloody knife on a handkerchief which ho held in his hand. He was a man of liberal education. Some Tasmanian Government “ Gazettes” of 1873, found in his house show that he was employed on a number of large public works, notably the survey of the Mersey and Deloraine railway. It is conjectured that from Tasmania he went to Victoria, thence to Auckland, where his life has been a continued struggle with indigence, his troubles certainly not being alleviated by his unsettled habits. The Board of Education has made up a statement of its affairs to be submitted to the Government, showing that it is £20,000 in debt, and requires £40,000 to complete tho school buildings and teachers’ residences, which are urgently required. At the inquest on Shera, the laborer found hanging in his whare at Obaupo, the evidence showed that ho had hung himself in a very deliberate manner. The Catholics have started a weekly paper entitled tho “ Freeman’s Journal.” NEW PLYMOUTH, July 26. After the meeting re Native matters, another meeting was held to discuss Mr Carrington’s conduct in supporting the Grey Ministry, when a resolution was passed expressing entire confidence in Major Atkinson and Mr Kelly, with regard to their opinion of Native affairs. Mr Carrington’s conduct will be more fully discussed by his constituents on Monday afternoon at Waitara. WELLINGTON, July 26. Mr Sellars this morning recovered a hundred pounds damages from Captain Stafford, for charging him at the R.M. Court with having stolen some articles of furniture which Sellars sold, and Stafford purchased at auction. The Magistrate said at the time such a trumpery case should never have been brought into Court. Sellers sought to recover £ISOO. The sentence of the Court of Inquiry into the wreck of the Swallow is confirmed. The number of telegrams foi warded from April to June, 1879, was 355,331, showing an increase of 21 223. The cash received was £18,945, or a decrease of £9l. The value of Government telegrams for the same period was £7988, showing an increase of £2249. The intention ot the Borough of Ashburton to raise a loan is gazetted. The survey of the first section of the West Coast Rail war from Kaiwarra to Johnsonviile is completed, and the Public Works Department is in a position to invite tenders for its construction. The line is a wonderfully easy one. The Minister of Public Works, having intimated to Mr Wallace that the Government would go on with the construction at once if the land through which the line passes was given without payment, has, it is said, obtained tho consent of nearly every owner of land through which the railway will run to give whatever land is required for the line free of all charge. Tenders will be out shortly. The Zealandia, with the London mails of Juno 19th, left San Francisco for Auckland on the 7th July, contract date. The City ot Sydney, with the Colonial June mails, arrived at San Francisco on the 15th July, being two days in advance of contract time. The following candidates have passed the Civil Service Junior examination :—W. Hart and W. J. Hawley. Mr O, T. McMurdo, chief agent of the Government Insurance department, has been dismissed from the public service. July 23. Tho times and polling places for hearing objections to the valuation under the Land Tax Act in Canterbury district are :—For tho boroughs of Christchurch and those in the country, the objections are to bo heard in Christchurch by special arrangment, at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Christchurch, on Friday, Bth August, at 10 a.m.; for the district of Templeton, Road Board office, Templeton, on Saturday, 9th August, at 10 a.m. j for Courtenay, Rakaia, Lake Coleridge, Malvern, South Malvern, East Malvern, and Upper Waimakariri districts, Road Board office, Kirwee, on Tuesday, 12th August, at 10 a.m., and Selwyn County Council office, Christchurch, on Thursday, 14th August, at 10 a.m. ; for the borough of Lyttelton and the Port Victoria districts. Resident Magistrate’s Courthouse, Lyttelton, on Saturday, 16th August, at 10 a.m. A body, found off Cape Terawlti, is supposed to be that of one of the two Italian fishermen lost with a boat iu the recent heavy gale.
DUNEDIN, July 26. Owing to the dullness of trade Guthrie and Laraach's entire establishment to-day had their wages reduced. In the case of Keast and McCarthy v the Corporation to-day the jury found for the defendants. This will stop actions against the City Council for damage done by construction of drains and diversion of natural watercourses.
Robertson Wylie Webb, charged with having, on 21st instant, at house, Mullochy gully, sold to Robert Dunbar two pints of beer, was fined £2O, or two months’ imprisonment. Charles A. Wilson, charged with having on the 21st instant sold to Robert Henry, at Strath-Taieri, one gill of brandy without a license, was fined 20j. At an early hour this morning a two-storey wood and iron building, consisting of eleven rooms, seven upstairs and three down and a shop, situate at comer of King and Howe streets, owned and occupied by Richard Lamb, butcher, was discovered to be on fire. The damage done was very great. The amount of the insurance is uncertain.
