FORESTERS’ ENTERTAINMENT.
Tho eleventh performance, in aid of the widow and orphan fund of the ancient prder of Foresters, took place list evening at the Oddfellows’ Hall, and ptesod oil most successfully. The hall was full, and the pieces produced were put upon tht stage carefully and well. In the first piece, “ Tho Seven Clerks,” Mrs Walter Hill, in fulfilment of a long standing promho to assist, made appearance and received a most enthusiastic reception, she played the part of Victorine with care and spi. it throughout. Mr Addison, ns Claude Darnaud, sustained the character with great success, and the principals were ably asicsted by Messrs Ingleaen, T. Stapleton, sen,, Hobbs, F. O Phipps, E. Stapleton, T. Stapleton, jun,, end other members of the Foresters’ Dramatic Society. The piece was well mounted, the now scenery by Messrs R. Atkinson i i.d Mackay looking very well indeed. This was followed by a song, “ Tho Village Blacksmith,” by Mr Lang, which was encored. Mr U. Crooks, P.D.C.B. and secretary to tho fund, (hen came forward and said—“ Ladies and gentlemen, tho Widow and Orphans’ Fund of tho Ancient Order of Foresters, Canterbury district, was-
founded on the 28th October, 1867. The number of financial members at this date is forty-eight, and the balance-sheet of 1878 ■hows the total worth of the fund to be £758 16s 6Jd, which is invested in Building Societies here and in freehold security at good interest. The first annual performance in aid of the fund took place in the Theatre Boyal in May, 1867, and resulted in a clear profit of £SO 11a 2d. The performances have been held from year to year with the assistance of ■everal members and friends of the order, and have resulted in supplementing tho fund by over £4OO. The success of this entertainment is greatly due to the kind assistance of Mrs Walter Hill, who is gratuitously giving her valuable services, and to whom the members of the widow and orphans’ fund return their sincere thanks. [Cheers.] The Foresters’ Dramatic Society regret very much that they were debarred from assisting at the benefit of Mrs Hill owing to the action of the committee who conducted it, but the society one and all pledge themselves to repeat this entertainment for the benefit of Mrs Hill at the earliest opportunity. [Cheers.] The committee desire to return their sincere thanks to Mrs Searlo for her valuable services, and also to Mr Addison for the very able manner in which he has carried out the very responsible duties of stage manager on this and former occasions. [Applause.] Also, to_Mr Dang for having volunteered on this occasion. They desire likewise to thank Mr Towle and the gentlemen who have assisted him in the musical part of this evening’s entertainment.” [Cheers.] The farce of “ Mrs Green’s Snug Little Business” concluded the performance. In this Mrs Searlo as Mrs Green played with much success, and she was ably supported by the other characters. During the evening the orchestra under Mr Towle played some selections very nicely.
