In reference to the request of the Board to the Government that the Agent-General might be requested to advertise for a matron for the Christchurch Hospital in the London “ Times,” a reply from the Colonial Secretary’s office was received to the effect that “the proposal of the Board seemed to the Government hardly fair to any capable persons who may be in the colony,” and proceeded to say, “ If advertisement in Now Zealand does not result in procuring a competent person, the subject shall be reconsidered, but the Colonial Secretary is of opinion that there are many ladies competent for the position of matron of the Hospital in the colony, widows of Government officers, and others who have claims upon this country. It appears to him therefore that before bringing out a person at the expense of the colony it should be ascertained whether any of these ladies are at the same time willing and able to undertake the duty. Tho Mayor of Lyttelton stated that he understood there were ladies in Canterbury at present who had had experience in large hospitals at home. The Board approved of a draft letter drawn up as a reply to the Government. TESTIMONIAL TO THE DISPENSES.
