PAPERS RELATING TO THE NEW ZEALAND UNIVERSITY.

[By Telegraph ] WELLINGTON, July 21. Papers relating to the correspondence between the New Zealand University, the Minister of Education, and the Agent-General on the subject of the Gilchrist Scholarship Foundation are published. Sir J. Vogel stated that the disposition of scholarships does tot rest with the Senate of the London University, ns presumed by the Colonial Secretary, though the preliminary examination is conducted under the direction of that body, the control of the funds being vested in trustees named in Dr. Gilchrist’s will. Sir J. Yogel also says that his communication with Dr. Carpenter, Eegistrar of the London University, leads to the sanguine hope that before very long the privileges enjoyed by students in Sydney and Melbourne universities will be extended to New Zealand, though not cne of the Melbourne alumni has yet claimed the scholarship, while several students sent applications from Sydney. Sir J. Vogel is led to believe, through a conversation of Mr Cashel Hoey with Dr. Carpenter, that in future admissions to the privileges of the fund, examinations of the lo:al University or other institution will not he accepted, but special examinations will be conducted through the instrumentality of the Colonial Office, as they now are for the Indian scholarships through tho Indian Office.
