THE HAWERA SETTLERS AND THE MINISTRY.
WELLINGTON, July . James Carroll has been appointed interpreter inthe.House of Representatives. The Hawera deputation, consisting of Messrs Lysaight and McGuire, waited upon SirG. Grey and Colonel Whitmore to day to urge the Government to take prompt steps for the defence of settlers, urging that the forc-'B now in the district are insufficient, and pointing out that numbers are leaving the district owing to want of employment. They also strongly urged the necessity of rooccupyingthe Waimato plains, and bringing Hiroki to justice. There was a general feeling of insecurity. Unless some decisive action was taken a great crisis would ensue. Ministers stated that Colonel Roberts was instructed to report on the forces required in the district, and he considered that with the reinforcements shortly to be sent, there would be ample to meet any emergency. Colonel Whitmore added that if necessary 3000 men could be placed upon the Plains within a week. Sir G Grey promised that within a week there would be employment in the district for 300 or 400. With reference to the reoccupation of the Plains and arrest of Hiroki, Ministers declined to say what their plans were. Sir G. Grey added that it would be imwnnfli* f.o rliaolnan f.ViAm n>. rivoflonf
