At a meeting of the Timaru public school committee last evening, it was decided that they should all resign, in consequence of the action of the Board of Education in refusing to appoint the candidate they recommended as second master. The Timaru steeplechases w : ll be held this afternoon in Cain’s paddock, about two m : ies from town. The Southern Maori Election. KAIAPOI, July IG. The poll was declared to-day. Taim'i, 191 ; Teihota. 78; Pamtene, 60 ; majority for Tainr ; , 113. Ho was declared elec’el. 329 votes were recorded during this election, [PEE PEEBB AQBNOr.] The Native Crisis. HEW PLYMOUTH, July IG. The interest taken in Te Whiti by the Natives hero is greater than ever. A very large number have gone to Paiihaka, and it
is confidently stated that the prophet’* core nation as King of the Maoris will take place to-morrow. A movement among the Armed Constabulary is taking place. A detachment with baggage left New Plymouth for the South this morning, and at noon the men encamped at Oakura were in heavy marching order.
WELLINGTON, JVy 16. The Loch New cleared yesterday with a cargo of produce, valued at £25,231. The gunboat Sandfly sailed for Sydney yesterday. The Maori Prisoners. It is not yet decided whether any Maori prisoners will be sent to Otago. Political.
The “Times” says the first step to be taken by the Opposition is the expulsion of the G-rcy Ministry from cilice ; it also says that it believes there is a considerable deficit, and a number of clamorous creditors are ask-'ng money from the Govei ament but receiving none. The “ Times ” says that Mr Brycehaa distinctly declined to come forward as Government candidate for the Chairmanship of Oomm’ttees. It is understood that the Opposition wi. I not take hostile action on the address in reply, but immediately afterwards w : U take a direct vote of want of confident', specially accusing the Government of maladministration. Opposition members state that the Premitl w"' l '. second Sir W. Fox’s motion to appoint Mr Seymour Chairman of Committees. The Land Tax.
At the healing to-day of objections to the land tax valuations a legal point was raised! that reserves vested in boroughs, although occupied by tenants, could not bo taxed. The point is whether these reserves should he subject to restriction as to building, or whether they should bo valued as ordinary freeholds.. The magistrates reserved their decision tills two tb : s afternoon.
AUCKLAND, July 15. The dispute re the Okatu block at Cambridge was settled amicably. Football players are veiy much aggrieved at an order from the Government depriving them of the use of a paddock at the back of Government House on which matches had hitherto taken place. An old man, named Stafford, while intoxicated, had quarrelled with a Mrs Drummond. He rushed out of her house, fell heavily on the pavement, and sustained severe injuries,, h’s temple being cut, end head covered with blood. At the hospital it was found that h& was suffering from concussion of the brain. NAPIER. July 15, A curious charge of anon was heard at the E.M. Court yesterday. A man named Jas, Soundys was charged with burning down his own house at Waipukurau, belonging to the Hon. H. E. Russell, but as the burning was down was done to spite Soundys’ wife and to injure Mr Er'sell, the Magistrate doubted whether the charge of arson could be sustained, *nd so they withdrew it, and the man was dealt with on a charge _of assaulting h : s W’ f e end using threatening language to her. It appeared that lash Friday he assau’ttd both his wife and daughter. They left the house and took refuge with a neighbour. As they did not retu-n that night Sorndys swore that his wife should, no longer havea house to live in, and so burnt it down— On a previous occasion he had threatened to shoot his wife, and she, seeing him about to take down his gun, cleared out quickly. Soundys then fired through the door. He was fined £1 for the assault, and ordered to be bound over, b’tnself in £SOO, and twosureties of £SO each, to keep the peace for six months. As he could not find the sureties he has gone to gaol for the six months. To-day a chemist named Carl Marie Gladman was charged with the manslaughter of a married woman named Laurirg, at Norsewood, on the 20th June. Mrs Lai” irg was taken in labor, and her husband procured the attendance of Qladmon, who was at first indisposed to attend, but was induced to consent, there being no medical man at hand. It was a double bii oh, and Gladman was vet/ unsuccessful with the case. The husband then went to Waipukurau by way of Kopua, and six hours afterwards brought Dr, Reid, but the woman died from exhaustion not long after. The evidence of Dr. Reid was to the effect that had the woman been attended by a qunl-'fied man from the first, she would probably have survived, but he could not say *3,;ath was caused by the treatment of thcpnsoner. The charge was dismissed.
■WELLINGTON, July 15. The work'ng men on the WellingtonMasterton Railway struct for more wages. The boat belonging to the two photographers who had such a narrow escape on Sunday when swimming ashore, was found on Petone Beach with the men’s clothes, but no money or watch.
Whakawira and the other Maori prisoners, hitherto confined in the Armed Oonstabu’ary cells, were removed to the Immigration Barracts yesterday. Eighteen more prisoners from Tmanaki ere expected to-morrow. A cheque for £228 was forwarded to-day as a contribution towards the Euitangata Relief Fund by the post officials in the colony. DUNEDIN, July 15. Bishop Nev :, l, who was expected to return to Dunedin per Garonne, is not a passenger. He has undertaken some Episcopal work in London for the Bishop of London. The election being over everything is dull, Mr Stewart, the successful candidate, leaves for Wellington on Friday. The City Council this afternoon instructed the finance committee to take immediate steps for obtaining the citizens’ consent to the issue of,'a new loan of £IOO,OOO for Municipal purposes.
The racehorses I?ang.itira and Lonehand, which arrived from Melbourne en routs for Christchurch by the steamer Rotorua, were landed in splendid condition at Port Chalmere-to-day.
The official declaration of the poll took place-to-day, the majority for Mr Stewart being, declared to bo 165. He and Mr Grant addressed the meeting. Mr Reeves was not present.
INVERCARGILL, July 15. A fire occurred this morning at the Southland ruattrass and bedding factory, owned by Mr W.Dunlop. The building and contents were totally destroyed. The stock was insured for £250. That sum far from covers the loss sustained, which Mr Dunlop estimates at over £SOO.
A preliminary inquiry was held to-day touching the stranding of the schooner Jana Anderson, at New River heads, on the 3rd inst. The evidence given by the pilot and captain was very contradictory, the former swearing that the necessary signals were given, while the latter denied the assertion. The decision of the Collector of Customs will bo made known shortly.
