On Tuesday everything was got m readiness to complete tho work of raising the steamer. A sail was fixed in position, so that it could ho drawn under tho vessel as soon as an opportunity presented itself, and the two centrifugal pumps used in the last attempt were got info •working order. The contractors felt confident of success, and half an hour more would have seen tho Tanpo afloat, when a wrive coming in with tno tide, which had just turned, struck the stranded ▼66861, and carried away a portion of the gear, ana so rendered all the previous work futile. As the contract time expired on Monday last, reluctantly decided to abandon the ‘ Tho contractors have been most unfortunate as regards tho weather, this being the third time that some portion of tho gear has been carried away A large sum of money has been expended in the attempt, and great sympathy is expr ssod i9 r ,*;“s contractors, who, it would appear, have indeed been unfortunate.
