PRESBYTERY OF CHRISTCHURCH.

The Presbytery of Christchurch mei on Thursday, loth July, in St. Church schoolroom. It was duly constituted with devotional exorcises. Sederunt —The Eev. Messrs Hill (moderator), X) .11^las, McGallum, Cree, Burnett, Hlake. Beattie, Horner, Elmslie, Fraser, and McGregor (clerk), and Mr Craighead, older. , , Minutes of Bth May, 28th May, and 21th June were read and approved. The Kev. Mr Elmslie laid on the table a minute of the Kev. Alexander M. Beattie 5 resignation of his charge at Killingworth, from the Presbytery of Neweastle'on- I'yne, and ms commi-si n from the colonial committee of the Free Chnrch of Scotland to this Presbytery, and moved that Mr Beattie be welcomed to labour within the bounds of the Presbytery. Mr MoCallum seconded, and Mr Beattie was welcomed by the right hand of fellowship. The clerk laid the formula of subscription to the Westminster standards. &c., subscribed by Mr Brownlow Westbrooke, on the table. The Eev. Mr Elmslie reported the satisfaction which the comm ttee had in their conference with Mr Westbrooke, and moved that he he received as a minister of the church. J |Mr Douglas seconded, and Mr Westbrooke, was received by the right hand of fellowship. The Moderator called on Mr Douglas to engage in prayer! for the blessirg of God to rest upon their labors who had now been received in their midst. On the motion of the Eav. Hr Fraser, the Bev. Messrs Westbrooke, Burnett, and Beattie were associated to take part in the proceedings. The Eev. Mr Elmslie reported that Mr Westbrooke was appointed pro. tern, to labor in the Eakaia district. The Presbytery was to proceed with Mr P. E. Monro’s examination. The clerk intimated that Mr Monro had communicated with him, and that ho was not yet prepared. . The report of the deputation from Kaiapoi and Eangiora congregation was read by Mr Fraser, convener ; also, letters of June 10th and July 9th, from the secretary of the committee of Eangi ra. . The whole matter of the visitation being enquired into, it was proposed by Mr Douglas, and seconded by Mr (Jree — 11 That the report of the committee be received, and also that they he instructed to meet with the committee of Eangiora,” which was agreed to. Mr Elmslie requested authority to moderate in a call to the congregation of Ashburton on 21st July. He intimated that the people were all of one mind to call Mr Beattie. Mi- Franer moved, and Mr Horner seconded, that the request be granted. The Clerk laid letter from Mr Alexander on ?he table, requesting certificate The Clerk was instructed to forward it to him in the 1 imam Presbytery. Mr Friaer reported that tho oommittee had met with tho representatives of the committee of Kimberley and Halkett, and that the Presbytery committee, as well as those representatives, were unanimous in thinking the_ proposed arrange nents with Mr Breach were impracticable. The members from Halkett and Kimberley requested that the Eev. Mr Burnett should be placed with them for three months, they attempting to pay him at the rate of £250 per annum. He proposed that their request be grant e 1, that 1 Mr Burnett remain three months, at the rate of .£'so per annum, and Mr McCallum seconded. It was also resolved that Mr Fraser bo asked to see that payment was made to Mr Burnett for the past three months. The Clerk intimated that Mr McKenzie had left Amberloy, and the grant in aid could not be used immediately for Wuitari. Mr JDougl.s begged to have his name withdrawn from the joint convenerahip of the Sabbath School committee, and that Mr Blake be appointed in his stead Agreed to. A deputation appeared from St. Andrew’s Kirk Session and financial committee, introduced by the Kev. C. Fraser, asking the Presbytery’s decision upon the validity of the election of those bodies and their subsequent proceedings. After some considerable discussion as to the farm in which the Presbytery’s deliverance should be given, the court passed a resolution recognising some irregularity in the form of the proceedings but va'.i iating the whole. The deputation than asked for a Presbyterial visitation. Mr Fraser moved that the deputation be granted, and that the deputation consist of the Eev. Messrs Elmslie, McGregor and Hill (convener), and Messrs Anderson and Fyfe, Elders. Mr Douglas seconded, and it was agreed to. The Moderator instructed tho clerk to put Mr Blake on the 801 l of P.esbytery. The letter of the Colonial Secretary of 21st May was read by Mr Fraser, and the question how the Secretary was to deal with students and probationers offering their services to this part of the colony was remitted to the Chnrch Extension committee. The matter of securing a site in tho new township of the Waipara, and the interests of the people on part of the Peninsula, and also of Mount Somers, were also remitted to tho Church Extension Committee. The report of the Congregational meeting held at Selton. on 3rd July, was read, and Mr Mclntosh’s resignation. After due inquiry and deliberation, it was moved by Mr Fraser—“ That the report be approved, and that Mr Mclntosh’s resignation be accepted, and stipend paid to this date,” which was seconded by Mr Douglas, and agreed to. The following resolutions were agreed to—(1) “ That the Presbytery recommends tho congregation to present to Mr Mclntosh three months’ stipend in addition ” (2) “ That the Eev. Messrs Elmslie, Fraser, and Hill, be a committee to write out a certificate to Mr Mclntosh. (3) 11 That the same committee raise subscriptions for his travelling expenses.” Tho Presbytery, on the motion of Mr Fraser, appointed Mr McGregor Moderator of Sefton district, and that Mr Burnett on Sabbath first preach the congregation vacant at Ashley, Sefton, and Deithfield. Letter was read from Mr Ogg, trea«nrerof Sustentation Fund, and forms given out to be filled up by congregation. Mr Elmslie intimated that Mr Tout was willing to become a student Evangelist under tho Presbytery. It was unanimously agreed that he bo accepted, and employed for three months. The meeting was closed with tho benediction.
