HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board held its usual fortnightly meeting yesterday at 4 p.m.

Present—Mr H. Thomson (in the chair), their Worships the Mayors of Christchurch and Sydenham, and Mr J. JS. March, hou. sec. The minutes of the preceding meeting were read and confirmed. chairman’s statement.

The Chairman said since the last meeting of the Board the Hospital committee had an interview with the staff on the subject of the house surgeons resignation. The staff suggested that Mr Pridgeon should be appointed acting house surgeon, and they readily agreed to render every assistance in carrying on the work of the institution. The committee accordingly gave Mr Chilton notice that they would relieve him of his duties on Thursday (to-morrow), at coon. During tho past fortnight there have been thirty-one patients admitted, and thirty-three discharged. Five deaths have occurred during that period. The total number now in Hospital is seventy-four. The catalogue of the books in the library is finished; it comprises 562 volumes. THE HOUSE SUEGEON. The following letter was received from the Secretary of the Hospital Staff, and read by the chairman: Christchurch Hospital, July sth, 1879. Sir, —I am very desirous that the staff should send some expression of tho way I have conducted tho Hospital to tho Board next Thursday. I remain, sincerely yours, Maurice A, Chilton. The Chairman Hospital Staff. The considered the above, and passed this resolution:— That, in our opinion, Mr Chilton was attentive, painstaking, we believe had the confidence of the patients, and performed his professional duties in a very satisfactory manner. INCREASE TO SALARIES. The following letter was read from the Colonial Under-Secretary : Colonial Secretary’s Office, Wellington, June 20th, 1879. Sir, —I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the number and date quoted in the margin, and in reply am directed to inform you that the Government approve of the proposed additions to the salaries of the head nurses, and of tho appointments referred to therein. It is presumed that the local bodies interested also approve of this increased expenditure, as the Hospital is really supported by them by deductions made from subsidies due to them. • J. E. March, Esq., Christchurch. CANTERBURY ORPHAN ASYLUM. The following report was read : The Chairman and Gentlemen of tho Charitable Aid Board. Gentlemen, —X beg to submit report for year ending June 30th, 1879. CHILDREN. Number on' books July Ist, 1878—Boys, C 6, girls, 42. Total, 108. Apprenticed and withdrawn by relations—Boys, 21; girls, 8. Total, 29. ADMITTED. Boys, 13; girls, 5. Total, 18. NUMBER ON BOOKS JUNE 30TH, 1879. Boys, 60 j girls, 37. Total, 97. There have been no deaths. The highest monthly average was 107, in August, 1878, and the lowest 88.6, in April, 1879. The average for tho year has been 98. EXPENDITURE. Tho total expenditure has been £1903 14s 10s, and is classified under the following heads: —

T'his gives an average weekly expenditure per toad of 7s 5Jd, which includes cost of education. RECEIPTS. The total sum received for maintenance of children has been £331125. X am. An application for an increase of salary from the master of the Orphanage was received by the Board and declined. "After transacting a considerable amount of routine business, dealing with cases of charitable relief, and passing accounts for payment, the Board adjourned.
