NORMAL SCHOOL MIDWINTER FESTIVAL.
Tho midwinter dramatic performance by the students of tho Normal School and their friends took placo last night in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Lichfield street. The hall was filled, about six hundred persons being present by invitation. The entertainment consisted of Goldsmith’s comedy, “ She Stoops to Conquer.” The interval between the acts of tho play were occupied with vocal and instrumental music. The- several characters in tho play were very creditably played by their respective representatives, especially
Tony Lurapkih and Mies Hardcastle. The other parts Were good in a minor degree. The characters were droll dressed, and the amateurs letter perfect in' thd words of their parts. The musical vielatVg-e was capitally arranged and went off with c'elat. Miss Dobson and Miss Boys played the “ Victoria waltz ”v a duet very nicely. This was followed by tne “Comrades Song,” by Mr J. T. M. Smith and friends, after which Msas B. Spensley sang a good selection from “IlTrovatore.” The first act of the comedy was then played. In the first interlude, “Hark the merry drum,” an unaccompanied quartette, was sung by Mr Smith and friends, and Miss Spensley was deservedly encored for the really admirablo way in which she gave “ Hear the wild winds blow.” The second act of the comedy then followed, and the next interval afforded the Mieses Spensley an opportunity of displaying their ability as pianoforte executants in a duet, the name of which could not be ascertained. The quartette (vocal), “The Soldier’s Love ” was sung by Mr Smith and friends, and the well known duett, “ Trust her not,” was charmingly sung by the Misses Spensley. After the third act of the play the choristers gave “ On the march ” with spirit, and the entertainment was brought to a close by a good comic duet, “ Very suspicious,” hv Messrs Fraser and M. H. Smith. The Hall was nicely draped and decorated with pot plants, and the new scenery, painted by Messrs R. Atkinson and McKay especially for the Oddfellows, was much admired. The whole performance was a success. This evening the performance will consist of the comedy of “ All that Glitters is not Gold,” and will. be open to the general public.
