MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
CHRISICHUROH. Tuesday, July 8. [Before G. L. Mellish, Esq., B.M.] Labobny.—William Easton, a boy twelve years of age, was charged with stealing- from the shop of W. H. Mein a saveloy worth 6d. The boy admitted the charge. The father of the lad said everything had been done to make his son a good boy. When at home ho was good and obedient, and he must have acquired his bad habits outside. He had had five or six situations as errand boy, and his employers all gave the same account of him, that when at .home he would do as he was told, and it was only when away that he got into trouble. His Worship said he was loth to punish him by whipping, as it would be more punishment'to his parents than to him,. but if ever he appeared in the court again he would be most severely deilt with. He would discharge him with a caution as to his behaviour for the future.
LY HELTON. Tuesday, Jtjiy 8. [Before J. Beswick, Esq., R.M.] Embezzling Cargo.—Arthur Eedmile, a Beaman belonging to the ship Red Gauntlet, was presented for broaching and taking some of the vessel's cargo. Cocstable Moutray testified that he arrested the prisoner on board the ship Himalaya'; prisoner stated that he had received a bottle of liquor from a stevc» dore. He said he had taken some drinks out of the bottle, and thought it was, brandy. Robert J. Phillip 3, chief officer of the ship Red Gauntlet, deposed that four cases of brandy were missing of the ship's cargo, five wers- broken and ullaged, besides some othergoods. Witnees identified the bottles produced by the police, as being of ! the same peculiar brand as that on the ullaged cases. J. A. Rook, second officer, said thai- on the 3rd instant, the prisoner- was was on the port wing, supposed to be breaking out the cargo. I saw him with a bottle in his. hand\ and Tasked what he had got there. He said there was something He put the bottle down on a crate and I jacked it up. This is the same bottle (bottle produced) i I looked in among the cases of liquor close by and I found one case broken. To the Court — IT did not see him" drinking the brandy. He had it in his hand. The paper stopper- w-asim it.. I was going from one gang to tha.obher. Wo were working two gangs. Wo. found cargo broached on the passage To the ' Witness—l did not see you broach or break : any cargo. The accused 2tated tftab he was "Not guilty," the stevedore gave him the grog. The Bench sentenced him. to one month's imprisonment. As the prisoner wag going out of the Court he put his fist against the second oficer's rjOße is a threatening manner. He was brought back and charged with contampt of Cov-t, but the officer not wishing, to prosecute, ho was let go with a caution. An Old dEiSNDEB.—-Mary Ann Newton was presented for drunkenness and for soliciting prostitution. Sargeant-Major O'Graiy testified to the circumstances, also to five previous convictions for drunkenness and usHg bad language. He said the woman had becoms an intolerable nuisance. Her husband is B. worthless fellow, and their children arc in tha Industrial SohooL to ono month's imprisonment.
