DIOCESAN SYNOD.
Wednesday, July 2. The Synod sat at 4 p.m., the Right Rev, the Primate presiding. The proceedings opened with prayer. SYNODSMBN.
The president reported that Messrs Webb, Cunningham, Nalder, and Allwright had been elected Synodsmen for Lyttelton. Rev. H. O. M. Watson moved—“ That the Parochial District of Halswell having failed to appoint a Synodsman, Mr H. W. Packer be appointed to fill the vacancy.” The resolution was agreed to. The Dean moved—“ That the Synod do proceed to elect a Church Property trustee in the place of Mr W. D. Carruthers, resigned.” The resolution was agreed to. The Dean moved—“ That Mr H. Solwyn Smith be appointed a Church [Property trustee.”
The resolution was agreed to. The Dean moved—“ That the Synod do proceed to the election of a member of the Diocesan Board of Trustees in the room of Mr W. Donald, resigned.” The motion was agreed to. The Dean then moved —“ That Mr H. Selwyn Smith be appointed a member of the Diocesan Board of Trustees.”
The motion was agreed to. The Rev. Canon Ootterill moved—“ That the Standing Committee be instructed to obtain full information with respect to all glebes in the diocese, and lay such information before the Synod at its annual session.” The motion was agreed to. On the part of Mr Homilton, the Dean moved —“That standing orders No*. 14, 15, 33, 35, 36, 37, be suspended for the purpose only of proceeding with all despatch with the Bill for declaring purposes of trusts, &o.”
The Rev. O. Bowen moved as an amendment—“ That the Synod go into committee for the purpose of considering the Bill to be submitted to the General Assembly for decluing purposes of trust.” Mr Mclntyre seconded the amendment, which, on being put, was carried. The Synod then went into committee* and adjourned for an hour at 6 30 p.m.
The Synod resumed at 7.30 p.m., and took up the consideration of the Bill in committee.
On resuming at 10.55 the committee reported the Bill with amendments. The Dean then moved the following resolution, which was agreed to—“ That the standing committee be authorised to take the necessary steps for introducing the same into both Houses of the Legislature. That the Hon. J. B. A. Acland be requested to take charge of the Bill in the Legislative Council and O. O. Bowen, Esq., in the House of Representatives.” Rev. Canon Ootterill moved—“ That the Synod go into committee to consider the protest of Mr O. O. Howard against the election of Synodsmen for Kaiapoi, and the rejoinder of the Returning Officer.” The motion was carried, and the Synod again went into committee, and on returning the following resolution was reported : —“That the Synod in committee have considered the protest by Mr O. O. Howard against the election of Synodsmen for Kaiapoi, and the rejoinder of Returning Officer, and have come t» the conclusion that the election of the sitting members is valid.” Mr Hamilton then moved —“ That the answer of the Returning Officer of Eaiapoi to to the objections made at the late elections for that parish appears to the Synod to be clear and satisfactory.” Mr Walker seconded the motion, which was agreed to. Mr Hamilton then moved the following : “That the latter part of the petitioners’ protest seems to this Synod to be highly disrespectful towards the Bishop of the diocese.” The Rev. E. A. Lingard seconded the motion, which was carried. Mr O. R. Blakiston moved—“ That the Church Property Trustees he authorised to incur all necessary expenditure incidental to the preparation and passing through the General Assembly of a Bill for declaring the purposes for which certain lands are held in trust by the Church Property Trustees within the diocese of Christchurch, and for the better defining the trusts thereof, and for the conveyance to, and vesting in, the said Church Property Trustees of certain other lands, and for the better regulation aud management of all lauds now or hereafter vested in the said trustees,” The resolution was carried.
Mr P. de c. Malet moved that a gratuity of £5 5s be made to the clerk of the diocesan office. Tho motion was carried. The Bev. C. Bowen moved that the thanks of the Synod be given to the Press for their careful and accurate reports. It was moved by the Key. O. Bowen, seconded by the Dean, that the thanks ot the Synod be given to the secretaries, lay and clerical. Rev E. A. Lingard and Mr A. E. N. Blakiston, for their services during the sitting of the Synod. The Synod then adjourned at midnight.
