FIRE.

At 12 o’clock last night the fire bell at Lichfield street rang out an alarm, which was smartly taken up by the Chester street station. For some few seconds it was difficult to discover whore the scene of the fire was, but ultimately it was found to be in the hardware store of Mr Nashelski, situate on the right of way off Cashel street, at the back of the Bank of Australasia. The firo was first discovered by Sergeant Hughes and a constable, who gave the alarm. The brigade, under Mr Superintendent Harris, mustered with their usual promptitude, as also did the fire police. The fire was found to bo under the flaor of the building, which is of wood, covered with galvanized iron. At the spot where the fire was fiercest, the flame had gone up the galvanized iron outside wall, and through a wi dow, looking out on to tho yard, setting fire to soma twine, &0., which was near. At the spot where the fire was supposed to have originated, there was an opening about five or six inches wide, and tho fire had spread under the floor for some yards around. Tho steamers took up their position at the tanks, and the hook and ladder company was also to the fore, but their gervioes were not required. Mr Superintendent Harris ordered a hole to be out in the floor, and introducing the hose of the pail pump the water was played on the burning joists, and in a few minutes all danger was an end. The building and contents and stock in the yard were insured in the New Zealand office for £IOOO, and some other insurances aro also said to be on it, but no satisfactory or reliable information could be obtained last night. Tho store contained a general assortment of ironmongery, &e., and was closed at 5 p.m. yesterday.
