ASHBURTON CHOIR UNION.

A concert in aid of the Wesleyan Church building fund was held at the Templar Hall in that borough on Wednesday night. It was given by the members of the Ashburton Choir Union, and was a great success, both in a pecuniary and musical sense. Mr Weeks acted as conductor; Misses Steane, Gates, A. Permain, A. Andrews, and Clark, and Mr Weeks gave instrumental pieces and played accompaniments. Songs were contributed by Misses Gates and Taylor, Mesdames Lo Breton and Penlington, and Messrs Harrison and Gates. The duets “ A B O,” by Miss Gates and Mr Weeks; “ Flower Gatherers, by Mesdames Lsßroton and Penlington; “ Gipsy Countess,” by Misses A. Permain and Savage ; and the trios “Ye shepherds tell me,” by Messrs Weeks and Pratt and Mrs Penlington; and “ There is a lady sweet and kind,” by Messrs Gates, Weeks, and Bennetts were all fairly rendered, and elicited much applause. “TheCamovale,” from “Oberon,” “God speed the plough,” “The Angels breathe on flowers,” “Awake iEolian Lyre, and “ Canadian boat song’’were sung with very fair time and expression by the members of the society, and the pleasure of the evening was further added to by the recitations by Miss Stewart and Mr Minnie. Altogether a very pleasant evening was spent, and it is hoped that an impetus will bo given to music in Ashburton by the efforts of the society.
