MEETING RE CHARITABLE AID.

A meeting of clergymen and others was held in tho City Council Chambers this morning. Present —The Bight Rev. the Primate, the Most Rev. the Dean of Christchurch, Rev. Messrs Ginaty, Dallaston, Lingard, Aldred, Reid, Penny, Elmslie, Watson, Fraser, Knowles, Keaet, Walker, Flavel, the Mayor of Christchurch, and Messrs Hobbs, Thompson, Maling, and Packer. Tho Chairman stated tho object of the meeting, namely to take into consideration the formation of a Charitable Belief Society for Christchurch. A good deal of discussion followed, most of those present expressing their individual views on (.he matter. Tho Rev. Mr Fraser moved a resolution as follows That this meeting approves of the institution of a benevolent aid society to meet cases of temporary distress, and at the same time records its opinion that a general scheme for charitable institutions throughout tho colony should be established by the Government.” The Rev. Mr. Flavel seconded the motion. Mr Thompson moved an amendment—- “ That it is definable to establish a benevolent society, and that a committee be appointed to bring up a report on tho on which it shou 1 d be formed.” The amendment was carried, and a com* mittee appointed. Subsequently Mr Fraser moved as a substantive motion, which was carried—” That a general scheme for charitable institutions throughout the colony should be established.” The mooting then adjourned after agreeing that the committee should meet on Monday next, at 3 o’clock.
