The Chairman made the following statement :—Since tho last meeting of the Board tho Hospital committee have met twice, and reports will be presented on several matters remitted to them for considorstion. During the past fortnight the admissions into the Hospital have been 19, and the discharges 12. One death is reported during this period. Tho total number of patients at present in the Hospital is 85. The number of patients in the Hospital cottage at Akaroa is four, one patient having been discharged since the last meeting of tho Board I have received a letter from the Borough Council at Akaroa, asking that the Council, as a large contributor to the support of the hospital cottage, be granted the power of appointing u. councillor, or councillors, to visit it from time to time, and report upon the management of the institution, it being understood that no interference in any way ie proposed, but that the Council is merely desirous of being in a position to occasionally inspect an institution in which the Borough is largely interested, and to make suggestions to the managing board. Letters and reports relating to tho Orphanage, the Home at Ashburton, and Beveral other matters referring to charitable aid, will be laid before the Board. VACCINATION. Public Vaccinator, the dispenser, and the gate-keeper. The committee, after hearing the evidence, are of opinion that the sfr'ti n of public vaccination would be better removed from the hospital, and they recommend that the Government be requested to provide suitable buildings elsewhere when practicable. The Board adopted the report as read. DEATHS IN THE HOSPITAL.
A report was submitted by the committee as to the question of publishing the particulars of the deaths which occurred in the hospital once a month, for the information of distant relatives. To the Chairman of the Hospital and Charitable jaid Board. Sir,—l beg to ask the Board to allow me to resign my position hero on the Ist of August. _ I have been offered a pos'tion which will enable rae to coiume - en practice in Ctristshurch under most favorable circumstances, and I am exceedingly anxious to avail niyfelf of it. I would ask the Board to take into consideration the fact tha'. I have my way to make in the world, and that an opportunity once lost is not easily found again, whilst the Salary here is not by any means large enough to induce any well qualified man who is a .-ibitious to remain any length cf tii"o.
The Board will sec that I Lav? already been appointed medical officer to eric of the largest friend y societies in Christ church. My daties ought to commence on the Ist of July, but, thanks to the kindness of some members of the staff, I shall hare little to do before August. Before that time I will use my best endeavours to obtain a substitute, und I believe at present one can be obtained. As this matter is of such importance to me, involving- the que.-tiou of my Fettling in Christchurch, or, indeed, in the colony, I trust that the Board will allow me to resign my position as soon as may be convenient. I have the honor to be, Yours sincerely, Maurice A. Chilton.
At tho suggestion of Dr. Turnbull, the engagement of Dr. Chilton was referred to, and subsequently discussed in committee. On resuming, the Board resolved to refer the matter to a special meeting of tho Board, to be held on the 2nd of July next.
AKABOA HOSPITAL. Tho Chairman read a letter from Dr. Guthrie, enclosing the resolution of the Akaroa Council referred to in the chairman'a statement regarding the position to be occupied by the Council in relation to tho management of the Hospital. Personally, he thought that confusion would be the only result of multiplying the control of so small an institution. The Board resolved that the letter be acknowledged and replied to, tho reply being left to the chairman and secretary. • APPLICATION BY MB BROWN. An application was wad from Mr R. Brown, dresser, for an increase of salary. Mr Brown's application waß Btrongly supported by the medical staff. Dr. Turnbull confirmed the opinion that
