RANGIORA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of this Council was held on Friday evening at 7 p.m. Preßont—The Mayor (Mr H. Blackett), Councillors Burt, Robinson, Good, White, Cone, Johnston, and Boyd. With regard to the non-payment of rent of reserve belonging to the borough, it was decided to request the tenant to comply with the terms of the agreement or the same would be considered at an end and the reserve let to someone else. A letter from Mr A, H. Cunningham was read recommending several men to the Council for employment. A letter from the Deputy Land Tax Commissioner was read asking that the valuation roll be returned. The clerk was instructed to comply with the request. The clerk read a note from the Secretary Bangiora Fire Brigade, acknowledging the receipt of £25 voted by the Council towards the brigade’s funds. A letter from Mr C. Pf, Pemberton was also read, stating that the borough map was completed, as he had done «U the work required by the map committee. In the matter of the balance of money due for payment of t e map, Or. Good moved—- ■“ That the matter stand over until next meeting.” Or. Robinson seconded the motion, which wan carried. The surveyor’s report was then read and considered. The day men had been employed in keeping upon the watercourses and repairing the roads. That twelve men had been put on the work provided for the unemployed—viz., the formation of Bdward street —and the surveyor asked what other work could be offered them when they have finished that already commenced. It wae decided not to employ men who have been offered other work, nor any who may leave other work to join the unemployed. Or, Cone asked if those who are working amongst the unemployed are all really in want, and not men who can get other work at reasonable rates. He thought that every one that applied should not have work but only those who are in want. The surveyor should have discretion to put on only those who could not get work elsewhere. The Mayor and Or. White thought the Council should fix euch a price for the work ns only such as are badly in want of work would accept. Or. Boyd thought the price given by the Council at present too high. The clerk reported that no one had undertaken to break stones at the price offered by the Council. Or. Johnston mentioned that the road from the gravel pit is in a very bad state, and suked if something could not be done to it by the unemployed. After a good deal of discussion as to how high it is desirable to raise the crowns of newly-formed streets, Cr. Boyd moved—“ That a uniform gradient be adopted throughout all streets now being formed, viz., one foot in chain streets, and six inches in half-chain streets.” Cr. Cone seconded this motion, which was agreed £to. It was resolved —“That the next street to be formed by the unemployed bo Blackett street, and at 3s per chain.” Two other streets running from Ashley street to Edward street, were mao decided to be formed, as was also one from Church street to Ring street, by the school property. Cr. Burt moved, and it was carried "That the unemployed be offered stone breaking at 3i per yard.” The surveyor reported that a quantity of water camo down Good street, and ran on to Or. Good’s property. It was resolved that for th future the same should be taken into the ’side channel along High street. The surveyor recommended that a load or two of shingle be placed on the footpath near the school. Decided to have the same done. It was also resolved to put a few loads on the north side of High street, the contractor for the shingling of Percival street footpath to be offered, the work at the same price as ha is being paid for his present contract. Or. Burt asko i if the contract for the formation of the East Town belt footpath had been completed ? The clerk said that although the work was let some three months ago it hod not yet been commenced, but as soon as the weather would allow the contractor intended doing it. The credit balance at the Bank was reported to be £659 19s. Accounts amounting to £B9 19s were passed for payment. Two tenders were received for shingling the footpath lately formed on the east side of Victoria street. After a good deal of discussion on the advisability of carting gravel th-oiigh the town during the winter months. Cr. Robinson moved that the matter be postponed for a short time. Or, Boyd moved that the lowest tender be accepted. On being put Or. Robinaon’s motion was carried. The Mayor stated that Mrs Fennell had applied to him for aid, and he had given her permission to get necessaries from the tradesmen of the place. Or. Cone stated that he knew of a piece of ground that would be a good gravel pit, and thought the Council should have a pit, and proposed—" That the Council call for tenders for a piece of land suitable for a gravel pit of not less than half an acre.” Cr. Robinson seconded the motion, and it was carried. Or. Cone drew attention to the necessity of a culvert or bridge across the creek on the East boundary. It was decided that the town clerk inspect the place and report to next meeting. Or. Boyd enquired if anything had been done towards purchasing a cemetery reserve. The Mayor eaid that the owner of a piece of land that had been recommended, was away from the district. Several Councillors thought the piece referred to was quite unsuitable for the purpose. It was resolved that the land be inspected. The Council then adjourned.
