ANOTHER GRAND EXHIBITION.

There appears to be quite a rage for exhibitions just now, and there seems to bo some probability that the thing may be a little overdone. Scarcely had people recovered from the excitement of the Philadelphia Centennial when they were called upon to send contributions to the Paris Exhibition ; and no sooner has this grand display become a thing of the past than Now South Wales invites the world to send contributions to that colony for the Exhibition of 1879. Then in 1880 there is to be a grand competitive show in Melbourne ; and in the same year Mexico aiks the world to assist her in carrying out a similar idea. We have just received from the Department of Public Works, Mexico, a copy of a circular which is to bo forwarded to the Governors of the various colonies inviting co-operation in this work The circular states that the works for the Exhibition were commenced on the 17feh of last February, but it does not state in what month it is proposed to open the building. The document is only a preliminary one, and does not contain much information useful to intending exhibitors beyond the announcement that communications will have to be addressed to the Managing Committee at Mexico, and that goods sent for exhibition will pay no duty except they are sold, and that “ they may remain exposed during six months exempt from all local or warehouse charges.” The objects the Government have in view in taking the step they have are, however, clearly stated in the following paragraph—“ To refute the erroneous impressions hold in foreign parts with respect to Mexico, and which have been so prejudicial to the interests of capital and labor; to open new markets for native productions; to protect the Meiican consumer by promoting competition in articles imported from abroad into our country ; to attract the elements which will place us in the position to solve our economical and social problems; these are the objects which the Executive proposes realising by means of the announced Exhibition.” In due course we shall no doubt receive fuller particulars with reference to this Exhibition, which wo shall not fail to place before our readers.
