LYTTELTON HARBOR BOARD.
A special meeting of the Lyttelton Harbor Board was bold vest.'.day in the Board room, Hereford street, at 3 run. Present —Tb« TTcu. E. llichard.se:; ■ - ha: -man), Hon, John Hall, H. P. Mnirty- 4 yusley, Aliwright, Auar, Cunningham and iiuvmaa, Tho Chairman explained that his object in calling the special meeting was the consideration of the expediency of appointing a committee to enquire into and take such action as may be found necessary in connection with the recent collision between the hopper-barge Sumner and the barque Rialto. He had received a report from the harbor-master containing the full particulara of the collision, and he was of opinion that the meeting was necessary, in order to obtain tho sanction of the Board for the expenditure of money, if such should be found necessary, without any loss of time. Ho did not at present propose to go into the question, but he might state that it had been thought proper to suspend Captain Wood, tho officer in charge of the Sumner at the time of the accident. An inquiry into the circumstances had been held by tho Collector of Customs in Lyttelton, and evidence had been taken and sworn to, which had been published in the daily papers. After a short discussion Mr Robert Allan moved the following resolution That the chairman, and Messrs Cunningham, Harman, and Murray-Aynsley, be appointed a committee to make enquiries into • the collision between the Sumner barge and the Rialto, with full power to take such steps in the matter as in their opinion may be to the interests of the Board.” The Hon. John Hall seconded tho resolution, which was agreed to. Mr Cunningham drew attention to the fact that one of the officers involved in the collision bad been suspended, which step had not been taken with the other, and he did not think one should be suspended and not tho other, as it might appear that partiality or favoritism had been shown. Mr Harman concurred in Mr Cunningham’s remarks, and, after some further desultory conversation had taken place on the matter, the business for which the meeting was called having been finished, the Board adjourned.
