THE GOVERNOR’S VISIT TO AUCKLAND.
[By Tbleqbaph.] AUCKLAND, June 16. Major Peacock, in presenting the address said —“ I have the honor to bo the medium to convey the congratulations of the people of Auckland on this your Excellency’s first visit to this fair city, and I have to ask your forbearance while I read the address, which embodies their expressions of loyalty and goodwill.” He then read the address from the Borough Council. The Governor replied as follows: —“Mr Mayor and Councillors, I acknowledge with satisfaction the expression of loyalty to the Queen contained in this address, and feel much gratified at the confidence you are good enough to express in me, as her Majesty’s representative in this colony. I thank you for the cordial welcome you offer to Lady Robinson, myself, and family to Auckland, and I can assure you I look forward with great pleasure, not only to this visit, but to returning and making a more lengthened stay amongst you on a future occasion.” At Onehunga the chief, Eewi, walked forward arm in arm with the Governor, and said to the bystanders : —“I do this in order to show that the Governor and I are now one.” The proceedings throughout were most enthusiastic and orderly. Only one accident occurred, a woman named Mrs Gardner falling through a skylight, by which she sustained a serious cut. The Vice-Regal party will visit Waikato and Thames, but the date of their future movements is not fixed.
