ACCIBCNT TO THE EIALTO, This morning the Merchant Shipping Company’s London barque Eialto, with closefnpon 1700 tons of coal on board, arrived from Newcastle, having loft there May 2.3 rd. The Eialto is an iron vessel, about ten years old, and is commanded by Captain Williamson, who has made several voyages in her from Londo i to Port Chalmers and to Wellington. As she made the heads at about seven o’clock the Harbor Board's tug steamer Lyttelton went out and took her in tow. It was intended to tow her direct to a berth at the wharf. The tug and the barque were right between tbe Moles at the entrance to the bay between ten and eleven o’clock when the hopper barge Smnner, Captain Wood, was attempting to pass, the barge being loaded with mud at the time. In doing so the barge collided against the Eialto, the steamer’s stern striking her right amidships. The barge soon after was found to be making water fast, and upon examination it was discovered that a crack had been made at the place struck by the steamer, extending from three inches below the water line to four or five feet down. Oakum was at once forced into it, and the pumps set to work. The vessel was then berthed, and is being discharged as rapidly as pos sible. SHIPPING TELEGEAMS, Port Chalmers, June 16.
