The royal phte at Windsor, of which an inventory has been taken, owing to the departure of her Majesty the Queen for Italy, is stated to be of the value of £1,800,000. It includes a gold service ordered by George IY., which will dine 140 persons, and one ot the finest wine coolers in the world, added to the collection by the same monarch ; a shield formed of snuff boxes worth £9OOO, and thirty dozen plates, worth £IO,OOO. There are also a variety of pieces brought from abroad and India. The latter include a peacock of precious stones of every description, worth £30,000, and Tippoo’s footstool, a tiger’s head with crystal teeth, and a solid ingot of gold for his tongue. A clever writer for children gives the following in one of his recent stories: —“ The Marquis Polypody’s head was clear of brains, and from the well* of its empty cage reverberated the opinions of whatever person might at any moment happen to address him. But the reverberation hai in it a sonorous rumble, giving it an air of great, originality.”
