Baugatira yesterday morning, when off Terawhiti, on her way down from Mannkan, Taranaki, and Wanganui. On rounding Cape Terawhiti a terrible sea and tido-np was encountered, against which tbo steamer had ereat difficulty in contending. One tremendous sea broke on hoard, Ailing the decks and carrying away the steering gear, thus placing the steamer in much danger for a time. Captain Evans acted with great promptness and presence of mind, immediately having makeshift steering gear rigged np under his direction, after which, with the aid of the canvas, the steamer was safely brought into port. Captain Evans deserves very high praise for his energy and skill. . ~, , TT According to advices received the s.s. Stad Haarlem had arrived at Eio prior to the 3rd instant. She made the run in twenty-eight days. The passengers were reported all well. When the steamer sailed from here it was intended to call at St. Vinesnt for coal, but having pnt into Rio.it is probable jjU would proceed thence direct to London.
