NEWS OF THE DAY.
Moee Light. —At a meeting of the public works committee hold this morning, it was received to remove the kerosene lamp at the north side of the Madras street bridge, and put in its place the ordinary street gas lamp, which will be a great improvement, aj the old means of illumination gave out a very dim tt- .d uncertain light. Wanted an Ovsxkb. —There came to the .ioor of a newspaper office (not a hundred miles from Christchurch) the other day, a gentleman of Bacchanalian habits, with spasms, and said he wanted the—hie —heditor. He was mot by a member of the staff who did nob happen to occupy the elevated position of literary bosshood, as the Yankees call it, and he told the spasmodic gentleman the edhor was out. “ Well, look ye here, mate,” »aid the other, " I subscribes to this paper, and I’m from the Rangitata. You’ll find my name on your list. Now, lend mo a shilling.” I ’haven’t one,” was the reply. “ Haven’t a shilling—hie-oh ray; well, lendsh shixshpmeo,” “I really couldn’t.” “Not a tam er! Well, look here, come and shout a hoystor. I come all the way over them plains for a hoyster, and I must have him.” . . . “Not shout a hoyster? Why, look here—hie—you’re mean!” and the spasmodic subscriber departed. Bt. Mabx’s, Addington. —The second of the series of winter entertainments for this parish will bo given in the schoolroom on Tu-sday (to morrow), Juno 10th. A good programme has been arranged. The proceeds of this entertainment will go to purchase now hymnals and psalms for St. Mary’s choir, the books now in use being quite worn out. This object will doubtless commend itself to all interested in the church, and draw a large audience to the entertainment to-morrow. Tee Unemployed. —ln reference to the question of finding work for the unemployed, in connection with which the different Hoad Boards were written to from the City Council, the town clerk has received a letter from the Lincoln Road Board, stating that the Board had no special work upon which to employ the men, but t hat contracts were about to be let for the construction of roads, upon which men in need of work might find employment
