ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

A special meeting of the Council of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society was held yesterday at Cookson's Commercial Hotel at 3 p.m. Present-Sir Cracroft Wilson (chairman), and Messrs Hill, Acland, Peacock, Dr. Frankish, and S. C. Parr (hon. sec). The Secretary read the following letter, which ho had received from tha Colonial Secretary:— Colonial Secretary's office, Wellington, 29th May, 1879. Sir,—Mr A. M. Johnson, the well-known pisciculturist, has applied for permission to capture both salmon and trout in the rivers of the Middle Island for the purpose of artificial propagation, in accordance with the terms of the Salmon and Trout Act, 1867. The Cnlonial Secretary directs me to inform you that the Government think it desirable to give Mr Johnson the permission asked for, but wish at the same time to secure the concurrence of the Acclimatisation Societies. Will you kindly furnish me with the opinion of yonr society on the matter at your earliest convenience ? I have the honor to be, sir, Your most obedient servant. HUOH POLIiKN, For the Under Secretary. The Chairman said he was utterly averse to the power being given to Mr Johnson to fish in a singlo river in the Middle Island. The society last year had distributed trout to very nearly the tune of 22,000, and giving the permission aaked for by Mr Johnson would be detrimental to all the fish interests of New Zealand. After a short discussion, in which every member of tho committee concurred with the chairman, tho following resolution was moved by Dr. Frankiab, and seconded by Mr S. C. Farr—" That, in the interests of fish culture and the stocking of the public streams with fish, it iB not desirable that leave should be given to Mr Johnson." The resolution was carried unanimously. The Council now resolved itself into committee, and shortly after adjourned,
