MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday, Junk 5. [Before GK L. Hellish, Esq., R.M.] Lunacy. Henry Allen, charged with lunacy from drink, was, on the recommendation of Dr. Coward, who had examined, him, remanded to Lyttelton until June I2th. Breach of the Peace.— Samuel Marks and William Henry Thompson were charged with creating a disturbance in the public street. The offence was admitted, and tho defendants fined 10s each. Drunk and Disorderly, Two first offenders were each fined s*.
Yageancy. — Charles Brown,| en elderly man, was charged with soliciting alms. Constable Neal stated that on the previous night he arrested the prisoner for begging from two men in the street. Sergeant Morice said that the man had been knocking about for the last six months, but had not been in custody very recently. The accused said that his family had his' property, and they had a right to keep him. He was a toolmaker by trade, and could help towards getting his own living, though ho was too weak and old to do a hard day’s work. His Worship—“ Has the prisoner a son P” Prisoner—“No, your Worship, but I can soon rise one,” The answer was received with a shout of laughter. On the question being repeated, the prisoner said ho had two sons, one residing in the Lincoln Road, and one at Westport. He had also a daughter, and “ if she would take him in he would turn teetotaller.” The case was adjourned for inquiries to be made.
LYTTELTON. Thuhsday, Junk 5. [Before H. Allwright, Esq., Mayor.] Fobgbey. David Stanley Wright was presented for forging and uttering a cheque amounting to £9 10s 6J. Sergeant-Major O’Grady stated that the accused had been arrested last evening, and, at his request, a remand was granted by the Bench to next Wednesday, Ilth instant.
